I stayed there this weekend. Very good experience. The staff is very helpful and the rooms are clean. The mattress was VERY comfortable and free laundry (tip only). And the train only woke me up once. My only (minor) complaint was that the shower drained so slowly that after 3 minutes I was standing ankle deep in soapy water. Kinda gross.

Another fun weekend in SJ.

Matt doesn't even know when the bar will be opening. Right now, he's just waiting for the proper paperwork / licenses. But he's at the mercy of the Costa Rican Beauracracy Network, and as you know - nothing moves that fast.

Were you in any one of the studio apartments? Gonna be staying in one at the end of march...

Having stayed (or suffered) at most of the hotels in the area, I have to agree with you fellas concerning La Amistad. Cool hotel, Matt! :D
Although, I picked up a couple honeys at HDR and they said La Amistad would not allow multiple chicas? I took one back with me and asked the night guy if more than one was okay. Initially, he said no but since I was in the worst room  (the one by the breakfast table) that it would be okay. I ended up calling to other one over and had reports of a party eminating from my room, when my buddy got coffee, b4 catching his flight.
Matt: you still owe me an upgrade. 8)

I'm just back from Amistad where I had the pleasure of staying for two solid, hard working weeks. A top notch operation, running smooth as glass, really.

My room was right across from one of the studio apartments and my neighbor and I shared a conversation or three so I spent some time in his studio apartment. It was large; full kitchen (fridge; microwave; toaster oven; 2 or 4 burner electric stove (can't remember the number): modern type...flush to the countertop. Everything you'll need if you plan on cooking. Suggestion: Check ahead for pots and pans and what not, as well as plates, glasses, eating utensils....as I am not sure how that works. King bed as I recall; quiet wall mounted a/c (which you probably won't need); ceiling fan; jacuzzi and shower; plenty of space....plenty....You will like it....

A review of the hotel may be read here: http://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowUserRevi ... _Jose.html

I just got back home from CR and I think that I may have found a new home at La Amistad. Matt and his staff were great! Their hospitality made me feel right at home. My room had a two (or three) person Jacuzzi, a sauna, and a very chica friendly bed. The breakfast was made to order and very delicious. I especially appreciated the fact that they made me pancakes and an omelet even though I woke up after the 10 am cutoff. And most importantly, bringing chicas in is a snap! No delays; nothing to sign; simply drop off her ID at the desk and away we go! My friends and I were even given a tour of some of the other penthouse rooms for comparison. We are already planning our next trip and we are definitely staying at the Amistad!

That's an excellent review on TripAdvisor--very complete. Natch, they mentioned nothing about our extracurricular diversions...

I have had multiple chicas there over last labor Day weekend and it was no problem. I have #312 at the end of the month and I am planning on having duplas there also.
