TONS of posts about this topic Geaux....Basically there are 2 camps.

1st camp....many people in this camp....Say you HAVE to stay at HDR at least once to experience it and why not make that experience the 1st time. There are plenty of guys on here that won't stay anywhere else. The argument for this camp: You just have to get that "shock n awe" feeling the 1st time. You will know what this means when you get there.

2nd camp....The hotel itself (in their opinions) is a total craphole and would NEVER stay there. Especially when presented with much better options for accomodations. The argument here: The place is a inexpensive cab ride or walk away from any downtown hotel.

Again, this will make more sense when you get here. 8) You will also learn 4 very important words....YOUR mileage may vary

Just shrug it off, Geauxtigers.

The situation is this: The Del Rey isn't a particularly great deal due to the "quality" and cost of their rooms; the chica fees; and the other "pricings" within the facility. That being said, many will suggest for a first trip that staying at the Del Rey can be quite functional because it gives you a reference point for future trips. You are right at the scene and have easy access to your room when needed; across the street is the Key Largo for night stuff, too. Some, if not many, who stay at the Del Rey don't even leave it I am told.

You're a VIP member, so you can explore if you're of a mind, the other lodging spots that offer VIP discounts to CRT members and are, perhaps, better value and maybe a $1.00 cab ride away and in more "quaint" surrondings. You can decide for yourself if you want to explore the other venues for finding chicas via the "massage parlors" and the strip clubs and etc., etc., etc.

Bluntly, there seems to be numerous "cliques" of members. You'll need to look, act, speak, etc. certain ways in order to join 'em. Many swear by the "action" available (there typically is a cadre of chicas who prefer to front their business out of the Sportsman's Lodge rather than the Del Rey) at the Sportsman Lodge with the fancy rooms, "sports bar" type set up with the numerous flat screen tv's about the lobby and bar area and what not; others really enjoy the low key and casual aspects as well as the less costly room rates at Castillo or Amistad which do not have "action" on the scene but which are both very open to activity and have no chica fees.

You'll see for yourself if you desire to find out by leaving the Del Rey. The object from my perspective is that you have yourself the fun you're desiring and are able to learn, learn, and learn what CR can be for you and your idea of a good time. It's all good, man. There's a ton of data within the web site that you might want to read, read, read....and you can ask as well. Welcome aboard.....

Geauxtigers, Cujo was just amused at your spelling of "del ray", it's "rey" with the 'e', meaning king in Spanish; the others just piled on your newbie mistake. :D
