I ended up going to Ichiban in San Pedro with a non-working girl I met in SJ (surprising - yes, and a moderately long story that I might relate sometime within these hallowed grounds). I'm not really all that well versed in suchi, but I do know what I like, and I liked it.

There is a sushi restaurant called JAPONESA COMIDA [sp?] in the modern shopping plaza just 50 feet down the hill and across the street from the New York Bar. You can sit on a balcony overlooking Central Avenida while eating. I like their sushi very much and go there to eat several times each trip. They also have other Japanese food as well.

I have looked around a few times in this area, but still can't find this restaurant. Can you, or anyone else, give me some VERY specific directions? What's around it? Is it on Avenida Central? Is there a sign? I'd really like to try it out.

Eddie,

There is a modern, plaza type building at the corner of Avenida Central and the street that runs downhill from the Del Rey. There are lots of shops and eating places in this plaza. The sushi place is located in the very front of this building on the second floor. They even have a balcony on the second floor that overlooks Avenida Central where you can sit and eat and watch the people going by below.

The plaza building is DIRECTLY ACROSS from the Mariscar [sp?] Restaurant on Avenida Central, that has the rotisserie chickens roasting in the window. In fact, if you stand in front of the Mariscar Restaurant and look across the street and to the second floor....you'll see the people on the balcony eating sushi.

Try "Izaki" in San Pedro. Go to the next right turn after Mas X Menos just east of the Outlet Mall. Turn right and Izaki is on the left side, mid-block.

Very good rolls. 8)

My favourites in San Jose are:

Restaurant Fuji - Hotel Crowne Plaza Corobicí (formerly Tryp Corobicí)
in my opinion in a class of its own

All also like all outlets of the Ichiban chain throughout San Jose
