Because you would be going to the Colonial exclussively to get change. Where at the SL you may be there anyway. You don't have to buy a drink for change, the front desk will hook you up. Either way we cant be talking about saving a few cents here or there. That makes me feel like a crotchety old man...

That's about a 7% whack from the rate I got at the bank of cr. Hotels always give you the worst rate. If you end up changing 7 or 800 dollars for a trip like I do that's about $50

That's why I now just bring dollars with me (20's and 50's) and use the hotel to change $20 at a time to get some small bills in colones. HLH and SL readily accept dollars so not much use for colones other than small meals, taxis and maid tips. If I should need more money I get colones from an ATM.

As a one time GLUCH vistor, back in April 08'
I took my fellow brothers advise; Liquor at luggage
pick up area before clearing customs and
$$$ exchange up on the second level while getting
your EXIT STAMP before all the mongers/eco tourists/familes
and alike hit the airport the same time you do when you
exit "TICALANDIA". My girl and I loved meeting Matt-Amistad
and The gang at Hotel Castillo-Gardens Bar!!! Needless to say,
Threesomes we had with the local TICAS made my girl
giggle with pleasure. Just named our new miniature schnauzer
TICA. Guess you can get the picture.
WE SHALL RETURN!!! DO your homework, you'll have fun too.

¡Hasta bien pronto!
¡Arriba España! :P

yesterday I exchanged my usa bankroll for colones at the bank across the street from the Morazan hotel, Bank of CR I think. They have a window there just for currency transactions. Gave me a rate of 567.5c to 1usd, the whole transaction took about 3 minutes of my time. Much better rate than the 540 to 1 my hotel was offering.

Was there a fee for the exchange and if so, how much?

Thanks!

CR Banks do not charge a fee for exchanging money. They make their money on the spread between the buy and sell rate. It varies from bank to bank but is between 10 and 12 colones per dollar.
