I've been drinking the Britt decaf recently,because I'm trying to cut down on the high-test stuff.It's OK but I would like to try some others.I can't find ANY decaf besides Britt at the Automercado.Does anyone have any ideas for me?

As far as I know Britt's is the only decaf available in CR. I was told the reason is that the coffee has to be shipped to Miami for processing into decaf and then returned to CR and no other roaster finds that economically viable. Britt's is very heavily orientated to the tourist market rather than the local market and therefore have a high enough demand for decaf to make it a viable situation.

A while back, I took a tour of the Doka Estates plantation that sells to large coffee houses like Starbucks. When we were touring the coffee processing plant, our tour guide told us something amazing. She said that the company sends X amount of coffee beans to Germany for de-caffeination. Once the beans are decaffeinated, they are shipped back to Doka, but the Germans keep the caffeine for production of other products. I questioned the business logic behind this process. She responded that the Germans use a natural process involving the use of only water and no chemicals, and yes it is cost-effective.

What does Doka do with the decaffeinated beans? I have never seen any decaf for sale in CR except Britt. I have asked all over, as I bring coffee to my family when I visit the states and some use decaf, and been told the only decaf available is Britt.

Doka sells it at the pizza place with the yellow cheese very exclusive place, where you need an invite to enter

So since they export it that means Britt is, unfortunately, the only option if you want decaf in Costa Rica.

Sorry for the interuption, however drinking decaf coffee from Costa Rica and the entire region is like drinking Sharpes or O'Duels beer without alcohol, WTF?

Everyone’s taste is different. Coffee grown in Tres Rios and Tarrazu regions are considered to be among the best. The regions are not exactly appellations like the wine regions of France but the roasters are some what snooty about their best brands.

Café Rey is good coffee but the economical brand has a lot of fillers, mostly sugar. Café Rey also has upgraded brands such as label Sanchez.

Britt is certainly well known. No one markets like Britt. They are really smart about selling their product lines. But not everyone thinks they have the best coffee although they are without a doubt the most expensive. To me Britt is the choice of tourists who have too much money and don’t know any better.

Brand names do not really identify who processes, roasts and packages the coffee. Dorado is a big name that markets several brands.

Volio is always a favorite and a very good brand.

I have never been fond of Montaña or of coffees from the Sarchi - Grecia area.

We use either 1820, Sol or Leyenda at home. I did not realize that Leyenda was a product of Britt.

Been my choice since I moved here.
