Ok....how Gringo can one get? While I enjoy the pan and all, I'm wondering if anyone knows of a bakery that produces a loaf of bread similiar to what we know here in the USA....as in whole wheat; 7 grain bread, etc. I've never found one except for the stuff in the super mercado's which is pretty gummy. Maybe in the San Pedro area around the University?

Look for a little shop called a "panaderia" they might have something similar or try the Mus a Mani on Avenida Central across from the Patio restaurant in the Balmoral hotel.

Or follow your nose. There are several bakeries around and you can smell the fresh baked bread smell. It is a nice break from the exhaust fumes.

Thanks. I know what a panaderia is; see them all the time; eat their pan all the time....but they're just not the 1.5lb loaf of whole wheat or whatever bread one obtains in the USA. Surely there are "vegans" or "hippies" or "health conscious" types that have their own little bakery??

I don't know what it is, but the local bread seems to fall apart if you look at it crosseyed. On the other hand, I have found that the 'multigrano' bread I buy at Automercado isn't half bad. It's not true hippie bread, but don't true hippies bake their own?

Is there nothing available around Santa Ana or Gringozoo (Escazu) ? If not, here is an opportunity for one of you guys that wanna move to CR and run a business. I taught my GF to bake american style banana bread and she and her girlfriend make and sell it to others.

He has been successful selling his banana bread for 14 years now. Guess he is doing something right.

Yeah...I really like Bruce's banana bread and look forward to it every trip. I buy a loaf and share it with friends at the Castillo during breakfast.

Thanks all. I don't feel so "uninformed" now. However, what's this Bruce's Bread stuff all about? Where is that secured?

Alright, too: I shall take two loaves of bread in my checked luggage for my impending trip. I guess there's room...along with the 500+ thread count sheets. Yeah, yeah....I'm off like that (getting ready to buy some bamboo sheets....got keep up with the fellow retired hippies....).

"Banana Bread Bruce" is sort of a fixture in the gulch area. He is a stocky man with a moustache, in his late fifties, who makes and sells delicious banana bread, with or without nuts. He will usually stop in the New York Bar during the late afternoon or early evening hours, with a large canvas bag over his shoulder, in which he carries his bread. If you should come across Bruce in your travels, try his bread.....you'll like it.

Yes....I have enjoyed Bruces' Pan Bonano also....As I recall...you can have your choice of with or without nuts.
