I'm doing civil enginering for the 506th airborne at the base in Kirkuk, Iraq
and making good bucks during the recession as they fire rockets at us. We're restricted to base and no cohabitation or booze is allowed. I can't wait to revisit CR whan I return... look up a chica I met.

Wayne, have you noticed how PC the Army has gotten? We went from the Playboy bunnies visiting the troops in 'Nam, to troops being denied beer and Playboy magazine in Afghanistan and Iraq.

When do you rotate out? I'm returning to CONUS in April and will be back in SJO two weeks later.

It's not really the Army being PC. It's what ever country their in, we have to respect the muslim religion and what not. In Vietnam there wasn't any type of religion banning these things. We have to respect the host country laws.

Anddo - I just back from DC. For me it was freezing ass cold. It was bordering on chaos with all the preparation for the 20th. Glad to be back in CR.

Look on the bright side...at least you'll have plenty of bucks for the ticas, nicas and colombianas at the DelRey. Three grateful nations thank you for your sacrifice!

naw, never in nam, however, i am in the service and know a little history. Been all over the world on deployments and know we always follow the host country rules. Even being overseas (germany/united kingdom, etc), the und***ge K*ds can drink and what not. But if you get in trouble off base, you'll have to answer to the host country laws and the UCMJ, military laws! Double jeapordy doesn't come in effect.

Bullshit. We can serve BBQ pork in the mess hall but not sell Penthouse in the PX? We don't respect these savages laws and customs about female circumcision (sp?), educating school girls, or not allowing women to drive, do we? In Korea, people like to eat roasted dog meat. We don't allow that on our bases. It is a selective respect for the natives' laws and customs. Our leadership uses what parts they like and ignore the parts they don't. It is really about a lack of trust. No up and coming officer can afford to let his career get derailed by a Soldier screwing up. It is the "zero defect" mentality.

Patton used to say, "A Soldier that won't Phuck, won't fight".

A generation of generals who were getting drunk and laid in 'Nam have turned into a bunch of nanny-state prudes in the 1990's. If you can't trust your Soldiers with a beer or two after a long, hard day, how can you trust them with a $3 million dollar tank? Someday, we will realize that our Soldiers are fighting men...not monks ....and that this no-booze policy might be the reason we have so many PTSD cases and alcoholics when they return from the war zone.

I salute your service but you sound a little immature to me. Sorry, but the years have given me some insight to see things from a wider perspective than my own.

You have to respect the cultures of your host nation. True, some of them are selective on base/post/ship but when you mix with the locals you have to follow their rules and customs.

Here's a story from another perspective:
When I was stationed in Turkey an NCO had to go downtown to get one of her people out of jail. While she was waiting for him to be released one of the jailers asked her if we beat our prisoners in the US? She said, "No".
He asked, "Then how do you get them to confess?"

Do your best, be proud of your service and your uniform and come home safe.
Just remember, it's all part of 20.

Wit: Immature? I don't think so. I just have a low tolerence for hyprocrisy.

As for years giving me insight: I enlisted in '81, commissioned in '83. I have deployed for 3 long tours, in '87, '93, and now, plus too many short ones to count on my fingers. I have commanded units for 14 of the last twenty years, and been an "advisor" to foriegn troops before that. Was a staff officer at brigade and division level. Completed Command and General Staff by the time I was a CPT. Qualified in Infantry, MP, MI, CA, FI and MSC branches, and Functional Areas 41, 43, and 39. I've been a reservist, a mobilized reservist, a DAC, and a MILTECH - every capacity you can be in this man's Army without a Regular commission. I have been serving longer than some of these "shake and bake" platoon sergeants and captains have been alive. I looke at these baby faced light colonels, realize that they were commissioned AFTER Desert Storm and forgive them for sissified ways because they didn't even spend a day in Ronald Reagan's Army.

I've seen a lot of chickenshit, but there seems to be more and more of it, the farther away we get from the Army that actually won wars instead of worrying about Political Correctness.

McArthur didn't coddle the Japanese. He knew exactly what was wrong with it and made their culture bend to our will. Same with Patton in Bavaria.

The "gringa" mentality is alive and well in our Armed Services and it is pumping so much estrogen into our military culture we will be lucky to settle for a Korean War "tie" in Afghanistan and "peace with honor" in Iraq.
