Some good coverage, in English, in Inside Costa Rica this morning. One town has been completely obliterated.

Julie, my longtime Favorita, lives outside Alajuela in Tacacori, close to Poas. Her apartment is adjacent to a hillside where coffee plants are located and I feared the rickety structure would capsize and fall down the hill. Aside from a little breakage and her phone going out for 40 minutes or so, everything is OK. Nevertheless, I will be there soon to render aid, both monetary and emotional.

Hello,
As you are aware Costa Rica was shook Wednesday by and Eartqueake. The magnitude was 6.2 in the Richter Scale causing severe damages all over the country but specially in 2 areas (Poas and Varablanca).
Unfortunately one of our closest co-workers (Yulieth Rubi) lives in the area where the epicentre occurred. This area it is a very poor area by itself and it was devastated. Her house is ruin today. They lose everything. They do not have at this point water, phones or electricity. We are asking to all the people we know to cooperate with anything. When you do not have nothing any single thing that you receive is much appreciate it.
However we have determined that right now there are 3 critical things that they need: food, clothes and Money. These are the 3 basic things that are required immediately. Of course some other type of help such as furniture, beds, matrix, tends, or electrical apliances are going to be needed in the very near future.
If you think that you can cooperate with something please contact me immediately and I will coordinate how to get the help to this family. My personal email address is mauricio.f.rodriguez@gmail.com and the numbers were you can reach me at are 8838-6461 or 8399-0210.

The best info about the earthquake is right here on this forum.
It really helps to have a large force with boots on the ground.
Thanks CRT troopers!
Haven't seen much on CNN. The local papers here don't even have any stories about the quake. CR must not have much worth to the U.S. $50,000 in aid is a slap in CR's face. :( I don't think I could hate my government more than I do now. :x They gave more aid to Haiti when the hurricane's hit and its not even a free country. I'm almost embarrast to say I'm from the U.S. If it wasn't for my business I'd be there right now helping the Red Cross. When Hurricane Andrew hit south Florida I was there for 2 weeks moving supplies and clearing roads.

U.S. Embassy issues information about earthquake.

Quote:
Subject: Message about January 8 earthquake from US Embassy

The Embassy alerts Americans traveling or living in Costa Rica that Costa Rica continues to experience numerous aftershocks from the January 8th earthquake. The Embassy encourages all American citizens in Costa Rica to contact their families and friends to update them on their welfare and whereabouts.

Most areas of Costa Rica have been unaffected by the earthquake, but the Embassy strongly cautions Americans to delay travel to the areas that were hardest hit which include Poas volcano and the La Paz Waterfall Gardens near the community of Vara Blanca. Approximately 300 tourists, including several dozen Americans, were stranded overnight in that area. Costa Rican authorities expect to extract all of the stranded tourists by January 9.

The Embassy has been in constant contact with local authorities and has not received any reports of any American deaths or missing Americans. A few Americans were reported injured by falling debris, but none seriously. The Embassy encourages any affected American citizen to contact the US Embassy as soon as possible. The Embassy is located in Pavas, a suburb of San Jose; telephone 506-2519-2000 during business hours (8am to 4:30pm), or 506-8863-4985 for after-hours emergencies; fax 506-2519-2099; internet website http://sanjose. usembassy. gov . The Consular Section is open for all American Citizen Services from 8AM to 11:30AM weekdays, excluding US and some Costa holidays. The Embassy has been inundated with inquiries about Americans traveling in Costa Rica. Without specific information as to where an individual is staying (the name of hotel and the city in which it is located), it is very difficult to locate any tourist that has not checked in with his/her family. The more information that can be provided about an individual the easier it will be to track them down.

American citizens in the US may call toll-free 888-407-4747 to inquire on the whereabouts and welfare of travelers in Costa Rica. Although Costa Rica is a geographically small country (about the size of West Virginia) many tourist sites are located in isolated locations, and mobile telephone service in those areas is often sporadic. The Embassy also suggests that individuals who are worried about their American citizen family members or friends, who are in Costa Rica, should continue to attempt to contact them directly via e-mail or telephone.

Unless the quake/hurricane/tornado is the U.S. they only give coverage to disasters that kill a 1000 or so or have property loss in the 100 millions.

Can you imagine either visiting the Poas or the waterfalls when this all occured?? I wonder if all the handrailing in and around the waterfalls remained intact?? It would be real frieky to be there trying to see down into the Poas while the earthquake occured. I wonder if any of the observation areas slipped inside??

NPR reports this morning on the 'quake. At least 19 reported deaths, dozens missing, infrastructure destroyed in the worst earthquake in a century. This came after a report on a ferryboat sinking in Indonesia with 250 + deaths. So it did make national media here even if sketchily

Yeah.....No doubt, NPR would report the quake. Shame it didn't get more coverage from the overall U.S. media.

I received an e-mail from my tico cousin living in Heredia. He and his son are engineers. His e-mail was not very optimistic...a lot of damage, buried villages, many people still missing, and around 100 dead or feared dead. He said new fractures were discovered in Volcan Poas, and there is growing concern of a major eruption. He also mentioned that a company which owns two helicopters was charging $1750 per head to evacuate stranded tourists in and around Poas. He and his daughter left Heredia and are staying at a condo in Jaco.
