Holy Crap Moses......I just checked the Map and Varablanca is just over the hill from my house. I,ve been up there a number of times as it is a beautiful ride. No wonder the GF and K*ds were balling. I will try to call her in a bit and see how things are. It's 3:00p.m. and I just spoke with her by phone. All is well at my house and much to my chagrin, the ATM is working fine.

According to CNN, the US Military is sending rescue choppers from Honduras. No wonder us Americans are so hated all across the planet. As for sending emergency funds; that would require using the banking system and we all know that the last time government funds went to the banking system.....well lets say that they just didn't get to the intended destination.

This is neither a disagreement or agreement on your post but is a clarification.

The U.S. military helicopters being flown in from Honduras were specifically requested by the government of Costa Rica. They have also been used in the past few months at the request of the Costa Rica and Panamanian governments to help with the rescue of victims of the floods in those countries.

From Inside Costa Rica this morning.

13 Dead, Many More Missing In Afternoon 6.2 Earthquake
In what is being called the worst earthquake in the are in the last 150 years has claimed the lives of 13 people, a number of them Ch*ldren trapped under the mud and earth from the tremors, and dozens more reported missing.

Two girls -- a seven year old and a nine year old -- died after the landslide destroyed their home in Fraijanes, the Cruz Roja (Red Cross) reported.

The early afternoon quake that registered 6.2 on the Richter Scale, with an epicentre some 10 Km east of the Volcán Poás, in Alajuela, east of San José, caused a great of damage to may homes in the area of Vara Blanca to Sarapiqui, taking complete sections of the road that communicates many communities and trapping hundreds, including tourists of the area's natural waterfalls.

The Comisión Nacional de Emergencias (CNE) - national emergency commission - reported at least 1.000 people were trapped in area that no longer had road access, the roadway being completed wiped out by landslides and tremors, and the only access to them would be by helicopters.

A call was made to all private helicopters operators to help out in the recovery of the trapped. CNE president, Daniel Gallardo, said that a call was also made to the US for help with their helicopters based in Honduras. However, due to the size there is the problem of the big helicopters being useful in the rescue as the may not be able to land in the mountainous terrain of the area.

The worst of the areas hit is near Vara Blanca. The area is at the top of the northern mountain range looking down on the cities of Alajuela and Heredia. The road network through the area connects the Central Valley to the Sarapiqui, Puerto Viejo (Heredia) and used also to access Guapiles.

The area is also frequented by tourists who take in the natural beauty of the area and includes the La Paz waterfalls.

Victor Gonzalez, of the Obvservatorio Vulcanológico y Sismológico de Costa Rica, said that the tremor is not tied to the volcano. "This earthquake is not associated with any volcanic activities but with the existing tectonic faults", he said.

Telluric shakes were felt in areas of Nicaragua, most of them in the Pacific Ocean, registering up to 4.5 degrees of intensity.

SJO closed for a few minutes yesterday so they could inspect the runway for possible quake damage. They found none and the airport reopened.

Unfortunately the explosion and subsequent fire at the warehouse near Tobias airport was in a building used by the Costa Rica government to store disaster supplies. The TV report is that it was started by a welders torch igniting mattresses that are store there to used at emergency shelters such as those needed by some victims of the earthquake.

You can help those affected by the earthquake, then get your donation to support the Committees of the Red Cross, we need non-perishable food, canned milk, bottled water and toiletries.
The institution also has bank accounts in the Banco Nacional de Costa Rica 100100-7 (colones) and 68666-7 (U.S. dollars) to receive monetary donations.
The Costa Rican people need your sympathy and your support.
It asks people not to deliver clothes, only products listed.

I could be wrong but in spite of the "muy Tico" factor it seems the National Emergency Commission (CNE) and Red Cross have done a good job of responding quickly to the disaster and people in need.

As of Friday afternoon, at least 1,000 people were expected to spend the night in CNE camps and community shelters, and an unknown number remained stranded in different areas, including at least 100 tourists believed to be trapped near the La Paz waterfall, a popular tourist destination.
A different Red Cross worker coordinating evacuation told The Tico Times Friday morning the number of dead was 17, and the head of CNE, Daniel Gallardo, told the daily La Nación he was sure of at least 18 deaths.

At least 42 communities were hard hit, but the greatest impact from the quake and its aftershocks – more than 1,000 in less than 24 hours – was felt in the towns of San Pedro de Poás, Vara Blanca and Cinchona.
On Friday afternoon, 1,600 households were still without electricity, after the Costa Rican Electricity Institute (ICE) restored power to 11,700 homes. Power will not be restored to Cinchona for another three weeks because ICE may have to build new posts and cables, said ICE's Jesús Sánchez. Two cell phone towers near the quake's epicenter were still down Friday evening.

The quake's casualties also include the Cariblanco hydroelectric power plant at San Miguel de Sarapiquí in north-central Costa Rica. The plant is full of mud and branches and will be shut down for a year, said ICE president Pedro Pablo Quirós. Another 38 rural aqueducts were also damaged, leaving 38,400 people without a regular water supply.

President Oscar Arias visited affected communities Friday morning, where he announced that Colombian President Alvaro Uribe and Central American leaders had offered to send aid. The U.S. Embassy has donated the use of Black Hawk helicopters for rescue efforts, and $50,000 for humanitarian aid.
According to CNE, at least 250 people were airlifted Friday from 63 different sites, with at least 25 people going to hospitals.

Well there's always some seeing an opportunity to price gouge(?)-

Charter company Aerobell was charging $1,600 to airlift groups of five people from Vara Blanca to the Tobías Bolaños Airport , in the western San José district of Pavas, said Melissa Cervantes, an Aerobell representative, on Friday. Aerobell airlifted about 30 people Friday morning, Cervantes said. Another charter company, Aerotour, was also reported to be running paid rescue missions.

A group of thirty-one French tourists were being rescued throughout the day at a cost of $7,415 for eight helicopter trips, said Natalí Vermerien, a coordinator for the tourist group who stood at the Tobias Bolaños airport with a small sign reading, “Gruope Leutard.”

“Everyone in the group is OK,” Vermerien said. “They are going to continue their trip through Costa Rica because, thank God, nobody was hurt.”
As of 2 p.m., the majority of the tourists arriving at the Tobías Bolaños Airport had been taken there by private charters. Arnoldo Sanauria, an official with the Red Cross coordinating airport arrivals, said the charter companies were going to begin working for the government conducting rescues after 1 p.m.

A group of Dutch tourists that walked out of the La Paz Waterfall Gardens said someone they believe to be working for the charter companies was charging stranded tourists $400 per person for a ride out.
“They took the wounded and women on Ch*ldren, but only on one or two flights, and the rest had to pay a lot of money,” said Laura Muijsers, one of the tourists.

This company may be of interest if you ever need medical evac. Looks like they sell their own travel insurance for this?

On Call International opens C.R. earthquake hotline

The best info about the earthquake is right here on this forum.
It really helps to have a large force with boots on the ground.
Thanks CRT troopers!

What you want to bet these are AMERICAN owned companies :?:  . Aerotour is a division of Robinson Helicopter, an American company. Aerobell says it is a 100% Costa Rican company but I have heard it is American owned.

......It's the American way; capitalism at its finest.

I think if I was stranded like that, I'd pay the fee for a quick ride out. 8)
