I agree with Western and others about your attire. Today at the SL most of the guys were in T-shirts, jeans and the ever present white tennis shoes. Until someone on the board brought that up, I never realized we all seem to wear white tennis shoes.

I wear sandals and rarely wear jeans. I'm strictly in shorts and a t-shirt weather permitting. I don't care how nice you look, you are going in and out of a known monger spots, the locals know why you are there regardless if you are in in a Brooks Brother suit or a wife beater and shorts. When a 50 year old guys comes out with a 20+ chica, it is a dead give away.

Spanky, "low profile" you ain't and what you wear just confuses the eye-witnesses.

For others, think about the times when you are on the street and not in the company of someone one-fourth your age: Do you look like you know what's up and where you are going or do you look like a newbie who just fell off the gringo bus and needs to have his wallet inspected?

Look like a victim in tee-shirt, shorts and white sneakers and someone is likely to want to check your oil. Street crime is real in San Jose and often involves a car pulling out of traffic to confront an unwary tourist. The tee-shirt, shorts and white shoes clearly scream "tourist" from two blocks away. Walk with your back to traffic in that gitup and you may get more attention than you expected not matter what time of day.

Spanky is young and spry and mostly demented. He may be mistaken for several known demons but rarely will he be taken for a victim. (I think "perp" is usually more descriptive...).

It's not the clothes that make us look like tourists, it's our gringo-ness. About 99.5% of us, couldn't pass for a Tico no matter what we did.

A C*ck ring with a safari hat and a pair of hiking boots only should be sufficient.

BINGO! Hence my point.

Pac, you are right on a lot of levels but you tread in areas where the average gringo isn't seen and even I hesitate to go in those areas dressing the way I do. When I do venture into tico areas I will slap on long pants and look respectable but most of the time, when I'm in monger land I'll wear shorts and a t-shirt since I ain't going to blend anyways.

Pac,

Ah, now I see what's what.

I was wondering why on my first trip you supplied me with that Bermuda shirt, black socks, a camera bag, and bedazzled Sombrero and guide map. You weren't trying to help at all.

And of course wearing white sneakers...could start a whole new fashion trend.
