Airlines buy fuel in bulk. It took them a long time to use the fuel they bought before the fuel price exploded. Now, we are paying the price for the expensive fuel, even though the price has fallen again. It will take a little while for them to go through the high priced fuel.

i got a january fare for 425 out of LA, but it was only available for one day and every day since its been 7-800. you just need to monitor fares everyday to get a deal right now.
but it is my understanding fares will drop in the new year. and i been informed by suppliers that they will dropping prices in my industry so the omens bode well at least.

That may be true but it certainly does not explain the price difference Corvetteman cited. Fuel was dropping in November so if they are still burning off expense fuel in December then certainly they were in November.

I have a fare alert set for the first week in March from SFO to SJO and it dropped the other day to $494, however it's still higher than the same time last year ($454) and is a two stop flight instead of one. I'm gonna hold off booking til around 30 days out and hope for prices to drop further.

Be sure to put a fare alert on kayak. I was able to find get a ticket for $269 RT from Baton Rouge in February. Orbitz and Cheap Tickets had them on Delta at that price. However, the same flight was over $800 on Delta.com.

Just keep checking they change all the time. I fly continental and the prices are the same or lower than when i started looking(6-06).I have noticed more +1 and double stops on some fares.

I just booked a rt flight from Chicago to CR on 2/20 for $350 on US Airways returning on Spirit. Both flights have one short stop. That is as low as I have seen, although I did read a post about 5 months ago where some guy said he found one for just under 3. A rt trip to the DR at that time would cost almost twice as much.

I just booked with Spirit at $263. Although, they nailed me with baggage fees, and a seat assignment fee. Total was like $350. So not bad, and more than reasonable.

Always check Continental and AA. I normally book 3 months in advance, about $288-$320 range from ORD. Avoid at all cost Mexicana, no matter how low the price gets.

I looked at Cont. and they were out of the question for the times I want. Also AA had several flights in that time span for about $70 more. I guess, as has been said you sometimes have to be luckey. The rate I took is about what I was hoping to get.

I'd take it as a grain of salt.

People have a bad incident with an airline, and deem them as the worlds worst. I have personally flown on Mexicana to Mexico City multiple times over the past few years, and have never so much as encountered a delay.

Delta on the other hand has lost a bag every time I have flown with them.

YMMV. Its all luck of the draw,

Flying Mexicana from ORD is like taking those buses in India, people hanging from the windows, chickens in the overhead bins. OK, I’m kidding but I have taken Mexicana multiple times to Mexico City and other locations and they are consistently disappointing.

Chicago, one of the biggest concentrations of Mexicans in the USA, equals their planes are always full. I’m Hispanic and they are my people but plastic bags are not considered luggage. :P :P Planes always leave late from ORD and then if you have never been to the Mexico City airport you are for some fun. Normally your gate assignment will not be schedule until 30 minutes before departing and the gate could be at the other side of the airport. And you better be close to the airline terminal because they may have 1-2 monitors to display the information. Primitive for an international airport.

They will add extra stops to the flight as they deem necessary. You do not want to get stuck at the Guatemalan airport. Overall shitty experience that will make you regret the savings of $20-$40.
