Intel,
As El C briefly mentioned, Hotel Freebird is a good choice. Actually, having stayed there it is a great choice. No, it doesn't have a bar or restaurant, but it is only 4 blocks away from the Dr, Key Largo, Mas x Menos, Presidente, Morazon and Avenida Central with the added bonus, at least to me, of not a lot of street noise. The suites are about ~~75 and Dennis, the owner is a really cool dude who mongers as well. Read my recent TR- 12 days on Thanksgiving.

My suggestion if you want to stay under $100/night or less would be the "modern wing" at Sportsmens Lodge, I've stayed in Las Palmas twice and thoroughly enjoyed it each time. I believe that modern wing roomson the website are considered the "Standard Deluxe" for $89/night and there's also the Jr. Suite in the modern wing for $99/night. Do not confuse the "modern wing" with the "Mansion Wing" which are the brand new beautiful rooms at SL starting at $119/night.

The best part of the SL is that you have a great bar scene there, very good food, a 10% CRT discount on everything; room and food / bar bill, you're only a 5 minute walk from NF / HLH, and about 8 minute walk to HDR.

I have never stayed at Amistad but was given a tour of it by a fellow CRT'er last time and would recommend that hotel as well based on what I saw.

Good luck Intel,

SK

Hi guys , It is spelled Morazan not Morazon and that is the place I suggest. Call 011-506- 2222-4622 and stay at the MORAZAN.

SpecialK, unfortunately the SL is already out of contention.

I....To clarify, I am not looking for the bargain basement necessarily, I would like to go to the $100 neighborhood at the top end. If I can find better for less, so be it. :D....So a little upscale is good, but not so much that it impacts my other parallel (Chica) budget. :D :o 8)

As to distance, I would always prefer closer to the fun, but since i haven't been there, I can't really say how far is far. If that makes any sense.

I have been reading about the HLH and wondered if that might be a good option? ...
I stand "clarified" on budget, though I don't think I was that far off. The Amistad PENTHOUSE is probably a budget buster for this particular guy at well over $100/nt AFTER taxes. OTOH, the STANDARD rooms at the MorazAn, are probably economizing a bit too much. Personally, I wouldn't go so far as to call them a shit hole, but they're hardly anything fancy and I have no idea what type of pit he lives in his "unnamed country". However there are all sorts of rooms at all of these places. I've already said that the STANDARD rooms at the Amistad might fit his bill. I mentioned the $43/nt room I got at the Castillo this past trip, but what I didn't say was that I usually go for the DELUXE rooms when I stay there for $20 more (before discounts), Between those 2 places, I'd still give the edge to the Castillo, not because of the rooms or the rates but because of its location which is about 3 blocks closer to everything else (except the SL) and because it has an active (though not exactly lively) bar of its own to hang out with and meet fellow CRTers.

And as for the MorazAn, the reason I was recommending that was not so much because of its bargain price as it was for its location right next door "Ground Zero". I think even a newbie could safely and quickly walk to/from the HDR venues at any time of the night or day. And, if the standard rooms at the MorazAn aren't good enough for you, they have Penthouse Suites too that some guys swear by. I'm not sure of the rates but I believe they cost less than $100.

And finally the new ID brings up the HLH. It certainly has the fun atmosphere downstairs that he was looking for (at least during the MP's open hours). And then there is the discounted rates for the chicas ($20/hr), which IMHO is that hotel's biggest selling point. However, with rates starting at $125 (less 10% discount plus 16.7% tax), this place hardly meets the $100 top end mark. If you deduct the $30 you save on a chica session then it brings the effective rate back down into his range, but that assumes several things. Would he otherwise be sessioning EVERY day at the LH/ZB? And is the $55/hr (plus the large propinas those girls have come to expect due to the grandiose tipping habits of many of their CRT patrons) really worth it. One can get chicas from anywhere for that much or less to come back to your room, without restricting oneself to the selection at the LH. And one can find chicas that are at least as good as the current crop of LH chicas at other MP's for as little as half as much. IF you plan to session EVERY day with AT LEAST 1 OR MORE LH chica AND you don't mind practically all if not all of your sessions (assuming you have at best only 2-3 sessions per day in you) being essentially restricted to their selection of chicas (in order to "make it pay") then the HLH could be a great place to stay. Obviously YMMV, but I just don't see it for someone who has stated he prefers to keep his lodging cost reasonable (under $100/nt) and would rather save his money for a wide selection of chicas.

That's my dos colones. Others should feel free to disagree.

Wasn't that really just calling them a shit hole again?

I'll say it again in another way. To a guy who likes staying in $110/nt penthouse suites in a city where the average hotel room rate is closer to $65/nt (for the hotels that gringos stay in, we won't go into the rates for the "tico hotels"), any place that costs much less than half as much is going to seem like a shithole. To the vast majority of guys who stay in rooms that are much closer to the average price these places seem perfectly fine. Lets not forget this is SJ not NYC, where even a $110/nt place probably really is a shithole. In SJ just because a place seems cut-rate with a rate under $50/nt that doesn't make it a shithole. If you want to talk about REAL shitholes, then see my recent review of Marruecos.

I'm just curious, Paco, how long has it been since you or Josie have stayed at the Morazan or have you even ever actually stayed in their suites? (and I don't mean to be "jumping all over you" when I ask this :P). Intel can find pics of the rooms at the Morazan at this link: http://www.1costaricalink.com/eng/hotels/hots/crmorazan/rooms.htm and decide for himself if those pictures looked like a shithole (even if the rooms were more rundown, which they aren't since they were recently remodeled).

Pro, at least the tread is taking a shithole comedic route. :P I have never stay or would stay at the shithole called Morazan. :P :P I have toured the rooms on a couple of occasions and like I said before, it is a shithole. :P :P :P I’m always looking for an alternative for a lower price. On every trip I try to check out alternatives hotels just in case. But the Morazan is definitely out of my list.

I think that too many of us are hung up on price while a better measurement should be the value of the room. I love a balcony, Jacuzzi and the overall feel of a penthouse. Normally I have to kick the girl out of my room because they do not want to leave. But if I was a MP only type of guy then it would be a waste of money to spend it on a penthouse. So from my perspective at $109 for all the added extras that I get, it is a great value and at a reasonable price. There is not too many places in SJ that will give you two Jacuzzis, balcony, high ceilings (give the impression of a bigger room), and more for those prices. If they are, let me know because I’m always hunting for a bargain.

You guys are really knowledgeable about the available accommodations in San Jose for those of us who have a particular penchant for special activities.

I know the responses were intended for IntelDesign but I am going to alert some of the guys I know who plan to come down for Super Bowl and have them look at these comments.

Good job and thanks.

Not really. Will be in country only for a couple of weeks. Then I'm going down to Panama City Panama. I've had a curiosity about a place called Golden Times that I need to get out of my system. Not to mention the fact that one of my favorite girls in Costa Rica is from Panama. So why not go to the source.
