I was just on-line and saw that the rate had dropped 30-something colones per dollar since yesterday. Did I read that correct?

I see 550/558 buy sell at the Central bank of CR. What do you see?

Colon has been all over the place in the past two weeks. I will use Scotia as an example, because I bank there and follow the movement there, but within a few colones the rate has been about the same in other banks.

On Monday November 24 the buy rate was 551 by Friday November 28 it had dropped to 525.

This week it has gained almost everything back and right now the rate is 547.

So the net result in the past two weeks is a drop of 4 colones per dollar. Hardly earth shaking.

The site I look at, Oanda, has it at 511.84 to $1.00. I'm glad it is still at 550. :D

The way it was explained to me is that everyone, plus the government needed colons to pay the 13th month bonus. By law they had to pay in colons so they had a sell off in dollars. I think the correction has been made, back to normal. I hope?

Yeah, right now XE has shows:

Live rates at 2008.12.06 20:12:44 UTC

United States Dollars Costa Rica Colones
1 USD = 524.745 CRC 1 CRC = 0.00190569 USD

I'm glad the rates in country are different. Whats the 13th month bonus?

It is called the aguinaldo and is required by law. Check out this thread for a discussion that was held about it.

The chica's can tell you the rates better than a banker can.

They can do the calculation faster in their head then the Central Bank president can do using his calculator and more accurately.

The vast majority of girls I have been with accept $40,000c as $80 (for example). Only one did the math and told me I owed her more money.

Best way to avoid the issue is to negocio in colones, IMHO.

The chicas don't have a clue. 90% of them think it is 500. The rest might have went to school.
