I need some hotel recommendations for a client couple of mine that plan to visit C.R. This is a very wealthy elderly couple (70's) so not looking for the DR or SL types. Looking for something upscale. I am familar and have stayed at the Hotel Melia Cariari and will refer them that location but was wondering whether there are any other Upscale Luxury type hotels in the San Jose area. Thx.

Check out the web site for the white house. Very upscale.

Hotel Barcelo San Jose Palacio

Hotel Gran de Oro

Hotel Radisson Europa

Hotel Alta

Hotel Real Intercontinental

Personally think the Gran de Oro meets your requirements the best.

Brother ID has nailed it for you. Both "Travel+Leisure" and Conde Nast "Traveler" like the heck out of it.The Barcelo property he mentioned though is a larger more amenity-laden hotel and has a more European esp. Spanish ambience including a grand piano in the lobby and live Latin music on weekends. It's owned by a Spanish company that operates worldwide.
Don't know what it's like but www.tripadvisor.com is also big on the Crowne Plaza Corobici (they certainly have the highest "rack" rates--$600 for the Presidential Suite, for example).
