DEL MAR serves a nice American style breakfast bufffet.....all the standard things we like; about $10.50.

Patio restaurant @ Hotel Balmoral has buffet & american breakfast. Nice scenery while you sip your second cup of coffee.

The Holiday Inn has an incredible breakfast buffet. Complete with omelette station...

SL has some nice cook-to-order breakfasts available. American style breakfast, omlettes, pancakes, etc.

Nice thing is you can probably enjoy the company of one or more CRT members while you eat!

While I like an American-style breakfast (what exactly is that?), I think it's equally satisfying to eat as the locals do. I got used to rice and beans as part of a balanced breakfast early on, and now I enjoy some gallo pinto with a little sour cream on top along with my huevos revueltos, tocina and pan tostada.

The good thing is this: If you eat like a tico, you'll find numerous little sodas around the Gulch that offer inexpensive, filling breakfasts. Instead of dropping $10.00 at the del Mar, you could spend half of that and get filled up. Fresh fruit is cheap, coffee is cheap, tortillas and gallo pinto are cheap. Desfrute!

Hey El C, order a little guacamole on the side and roll it all up in the little tortillas.... I love the typical breakfast here too. Gotta have some good fried plantains on the side too.

It is also usually much less expensive to eat like this. Like pancakes? Try the cornmeal chorreada (spelling?). Enjoy bacon? Consider a chuleta (pork chop) instead. And try the gallo pinto; the stuff will keep you from feeling hungry for hours after eating it. All these foods are available at most little hole-in-the-wall sodas around the Gulch.

One of our esteemed members, Californicationdude enjoys eating a cheap and simple breakfast in one of the little sodas along calle 6. He has often had a little coffee or breakfast with the little darlings who work the pensiones along that street. A breakfast in a local soda gives you more of the flavor of San Jose than would a breakfast, no matter how marvelous at a chain hotel (HI) at three times the price. Also, walking to that little soda is a great way to find other local places and meet more non-pro girls!

I always enjoy getting up early and going to the little bakery on Aveneda Central and gettig a loaf of warm raisin bread and a large coffe. Then sit in the park and watch ths little darlins walk to work while you eat.

Why pay for breakfast, stay at a hotel that has a free one.

Typical Amistad breakfast for me: four scrambled eggs with ham, gallo pinto, two pancakes and 2 slices of toast. No need for lunch.

I agree with all above, but, I miss the hell out of bacon as a standard breakfast item when in CR.

Yeah......I agree a typical tico breakfast would be cheaper, and give you more of the "native experience"............the problem is, I just don't care for tico food.
