Booze and bigotry can give even the most cowardly twit a degree of pseudo courage. Attempting to denigrate any group of people is more of a statement about that person’s private demons and feelings of gross inferiority than it is about the group which he is trying to malign and disparage.
It is very hard to know what to do about a monger who is acting a fool. Absent extenuating circumstances we would not have any legal authority to intercede.

• If one of us intervenes, can we as the intervener cross the line into illegal behavior which would result in legal problems for us?

• Would other mongers join in to help stop irresponsible and immature behavior?

The most powerful weapon against the unacceptable behavior of someone -- who at the very least is peripherally a part of the greater monger group - is for the rest of us to show obvious disapproval. It does not require physical involvement but rather clear verbal and body language statements that the foolish behavior is not acceptable.

Ostracization from the group can be very powerful pressure in persuading and modification aberrant behavior.

Just came home from dinner with a buddy of mine that is Armenian and we were discussing bigotry in general and the different types of bigotry that have impacted on our lives and our families (I'm Jewish). My friend's family, with the exception of his father, was largely wiped out in the Armenian Holocaust. His father was in Dachau and managed to escape when he was sent to Vienna on a slave labor detail and a bomb hit a bank and he scooped up enough currency in the confusion to split and make it to Switzerland. My friend's father met his mother in a DP camp outside of Rome and that is were John was born, a few years later his sister was born in their next home...a DP camp outside of Stuttgart. Finally Ellis Island and the US and the American Dream. We both were laughing at the fact that, unless a Jew is orthodox you can't tell if there Jewish or not. Last names are seldom a way to tell any longer for American Jews, although Armenian names are easily identifiable if you know what they are, and, unless you are throwing around Yiddish (a language that will probably die with my generation) there is no way to tell. So as members of two very distinct minorities (one Christian one not) we have gotten use to listening to idiots go on and on about subjects they really no nothing about. I think it is because they are bigots and cowards. Here is what I mean by that: the two groups I have mentioned are an extremely small subsection of the total world's population so they figure they can be macho at no personal risk. I would like to see him running his mouth like that in Haifia, Tel Aviv or Armenia. Of course he wouldn't. People that are idiots will be idiots when they think they can do so without risk.

Courage is standing up to bigotry and intolerance; courage is continuing to do what is right because it is right; courage is continuing on when you have lost everything.

Man’s Search for Meaning by Viktor Frankl is one of the most important books ever written. It is an historical account of the trials Dr. Frankl endured in a concentration camp and how he found the courage and will to live in spite of losing everything.

He went from being a highly respected physician to a prisoner who was stripped of everything except his intellect and his belief that life had meaning beyond the suffering of the camps. He was even able to find meaning in the senselessness of the suffering he was forced to endure. It was that meaning which gave him the strength to go on and to live.

You know it's kind of macabre funny in a sickening kind of way in terms of thisThread but who was it standing up to bigotry and social injustice in the U. S. from the 1910's to the 1940's?
