I always get Cafe Moca Organic Shade Grown but I have never had it. I buy it for gifts.

I'm not too familiar with the Cafe Britt roasts but I'll try to give you some info...

Cafe Central located inside the market has various coffees. IIRC they have an Espresso roast which is quite dark. Personally, I really like the Tres Rios beans that they sell. The Peaberry is very good too. The Poas is is cheaper but it is like "regular" coffee in my opinion. One good thing about Cafe Central is that they have Coffee Bar where you can buy a cup of coffee. So you could sample the coffee before you buy it. Also, Cafe Central sell their coffee by the 1/2 kilo or 1 kilo. (1.1 or 2.2 pounds) Most of the other places sell their coffee in 12 oz bags. It makes price comparison a bit tricky.

Across the street to the north of the mercado is Cafe Volio. They have a dark roast. I bought some my last time there. I'm drinking some now. It's pretty good but I still think that I prefer Tres Rios. Sold in 12 oz bags.

Hope this helps a bit.

Located on the far side of the market if you were coming from the DR. Street entrance only. Roast it right there and various size bags and very cheap compared to US prices, and great coffee. Make sure you tell them American grind. I buy as much as I can carry home of the dark roast before I leave and feeze it or give small bags as gifts. Before I leave because, in bulk, the smell is overwhelming in your room.

I was coming back thru Mexico City one time, and they flagged me on the x-ray, thinking the bags were full of somethin else--I told them regallos para mi amigios and everybody laughed when they opened it up.

Before leaving Costa Rica, I always stop at Mas O Menos and buy enough coffee to take home and last me until my next trip. I usually go with the CAFE LEYENDA dark roast classic; about 1300 colones for a 17.6 ounce bag. If you look at the side of the bag, it says it is a product of GRUPO CAFE BRITT. It is in a brown bag. I get the impression that the LEYENDA, in the brown bags, is packaged for the locals, and the bright, flashy red and green bags are designed for the tourists, at a higher price.
I also enjoy the CAFE 182O, as well as the VOLIO, which is higher priced.
I will also usually purchase some shade grown coffee from the little coffee shop located on "Pork Chop Hill," near the pork chop restaurant.

Reasons to substitute.

You get more product 17.6 oz vs 12 oz.

You pay less for that half kilo bag then you do for the 12 oz bag.

If you try a few different brands you will find some that are better then Britt. (obviously that is a YMMV type of thing)

I always grab a dozen bags of different varieties on my departure . This morning I just opened a bag of Triangulo de Oro---but no matter what brand I'm drinking, it always ends up tasting like the Baileys that I throw in it

cafe 1820 is dark.....not a connosieur of cafe britt, but always bring 'joe to go' back for myself and friend's.....if you need assistance get a nice female to help, always ask for whole beans,if you buy prepackaged coffee, the costa rica grinds are often too fine for coffee filters..the store will pack the beans for you in whatever size bag you want...in the supermarkets the prepackaged coffee{whole beans} will be marked grano[grain} or grano entero[whole bean]...if you go for prepackaged ground beans[molido]make sure its marked [puro]otherwise it will probaly be mixed with a lot of sugar the way ticos/ticas like it..........

Yeah.....as suggested in an above post, I pulled up the CAFE BRITT website..........really expensive! At least twice the price for a smaller package. No wonder they offer free shipping. :P

Cafe Britt is more of a marketing company than a coffee company :)

Like IBM with computing. Mid-quality product, extremely high price.

what i was intending to say was that if cafe britt is what you like and satisfies, then why substitute.
i order every so often and find it to be a treat.
it's also something my K*ds know they can buy for me that will make me smile.
sorry for any confusion.
