From what I've been reading the area of Limon has been experiencing some serious rain and flooding. I'm arriving Dec 3rd and was hoping to take the bus there for a day trip on the 4th or 5th. Does this sound plausable or should I just forget about it? :(

Since the dry season starts on Dec 1, (I know this because the price of most lodging increases) does the rain really decrease that much?

I've been wanting to get over there too, but from what I see in the papers looks like a month or two wait is in order.

If the rain is really bad, Hwy 32 (which takes you through Braulio Carrillo National Park), may be closed due to wash-outs. Check with Caribe Bus Line (which operates busses between San Jose and Limon). Caribe bus station is on Calle Central a block north of Avenida 13. Even if the weather is clear, there is always a chance a bridge may be out. There is an alternate route to Limon via Turrialba. Hwy 10 from Turrialba intersects with Hwy 32 at Siquerres (about 2 hours from Limon). When flooding has occured, dengue-carrying mosquitoes will be out in force. If all else fails, you may want to pick another destination.

Yeah, looks like Limons not going to happen for me on this trip. :(
Insidecostarica.com has an article about this being the seventh straight day of rain and about how 30,000 people have evactuated their homes. A pretty bad situation.

I really wanted the experience the Carribean culture in the area. Maybe next time. Are there any "honest" charities to send a donation to for help with the victims of the flood?

If you try to get to Limon province via the pista Limon, they will turn you around and send you back to the San Jose valley. If you try through Turrialba, they will turn you around and send you back to Turriabla.

Not only are there bridges out but the pass through Braullio Carillo Park has experienced a lot of earth slides which have both blocked the road and caused the road to fall away.

By the time you get here it may be clean up and somewhat passable but you consider alternative plans. Radio ECO had the Minister of Transportation on this morning. She said that only people who live in the area or people with exigent circumstances are allowed to pass.

You can consider a flight but before you do that you really need to consider what value you would get out of going to Limon. In other words, if the passage were not disasterous, what you do want to achieve by going to Limon. There are a lot of people whom I know who would discourage you from going at any time.

Be happy that the area is flooding. With any luck, the whole friggin town might wash into the sea. Probably one of the worse holes in CR.

According to the local news, its almost a disaster. The Sixaxola river has flooded the entire Puerto Viejo area. About the only place I didn't see under water was the town of Limon. Which like a previous poster stated, might as well be washed to the sea.

SlimJohnson Perhaps you have been there before and there is something which draws you back to Limon. Most people here avoid it unless they have relatives or other specific reasons to go there.

Limon proper could use a lot of improvement. Think of an archetypal industrial port city; then juxtapose several layers of filth, degradation, peril and corruption on top and you have Limon.

The outlying areas such as Puerto Viejo can be nice but the apparent rural, tranquil setting can belie the significant dangers which lurk just beyond the edge of the jungle or rain forest, depending on what one wants to call the thick, lush, entangling vegitation.

This visit I'd like to do a few day trips to different locales. Since cruise ships stop there I didn't see Limon as being particulary dangerous. I've read about back packers enjoying the beach and so on. From what I've read it just seemed laid back. To me it's a non-issue since I can't go there anyway because of the floods. I will take everyones word that it's a shithole. But could someone be a little more specific as why it should be avoided? Is it any more dangerous than San Jose? People must go there for some reason.

IMHO most people who hate Limon also seem to hate black people, they just never seem to add that part out loud. Most black folks I know here seem to think it is a nice place. I hope to get over there sometime next year.

I've explored Limon City (aka Puerto Limon) twice on my way to or from Puerto Viejo de Talamanca. I never spent the night there, however, toured the city during daylight hours by car and by foot. The waterfront is exactly that...and not much to look at. (Think of an industrial area with cargo containers, trucks and freight locomotives with a sprinkling of souvenir stands for the disembarked cruise ship passengers.) Parque Vargas, one of the main parks in town looks like it hasn't been touched since my grandfather took a picture of it in 1915. The main shopping area, about a block or two from the waterfront, has a number of shops and restaurants that surround a large square decorated with large green blocks. The rest of centro is crowded with non-descript buildings containing shops, sodas, small hotels and sodas. There are several sailor bars along the seawall frequented by merchant seamen and a few putas. In the outskirts of town, you will find various neighborhoods with ramshackle little casas, small bars and stores. Just to the south of Limon is an airstrip that serves as Limon's principal airport.

Is crime any worse than in San Jose? Not sure I can make a comparison. I never experienced any problems while visiting the city, but I do keep my guard up at all times. Deserved or undeserved, Limon has a bad rep, so I will leave it at that.

As I said early, I am usually "just passing through" or bypassing Limon on my way to Puerto Viejo (about 60 kms to the south). I've vacationed in PV 9 or 10 times over the past 4 1/2 years, and consider it one of my favorite spots to chill. The drive along the beach from Limon to PV is relaxing and beautiful. There are many beautiful beaches on the 14 km stretch from PV to Manzanillo. A hike or boat ride through the Manzanillo - Gandoca preserve is worth the trip. In nearby Bribri is the Kekoldi Indian reservation where there are a couple of isolated, beautiful waterfalls to spend a low-key afternoon. Puerto Viejo is an interesting, fun little village that attracts an ecclectic mix of back-packers, surfers and ex-pats from all over the world. Even though there are a lot of tourists, PV never struck me as being overly-touristy. For the most part, the natives and ex-pats are friendly and accommodating. The night-life in PV is a blast...live music, bonfires on the beach, open-air discos and bars. Don't expect to find any P4P here unless you have brought your own from the gulch. From what I have been reading on this thread about the weather, now would not be a good time to go. Save PV as a destination for more sunny days.

BlueDevil’s description of coastal Limon province is excellent. The tourism board should hire BlueDevil to write copy for their brouchures and audio advertisements.

Well, I really do appreciate all the comments on Limon. The honest commentary is why I belong to this group. All I really wanted to do was take a scenic ride to the Caribbean Coast, have some jerk chicken for lunch and head back to SJ for some evening activities. Seemed like a good idea.
