Normally when they are doing a sweep they will not take the time to accompany you back to your hotel to get ID. They will take you to the immigration lock up and confirm your passport and entry date info from their computer data base. It is not necessarily done immediately and it is possible you could be detained for some time.

Just make sure you always carry a photo copy of your passport info page and your entry stamp page and you will avoid all the problems.

I believe they would go with you if the hotel is close by to see your passport. If not close by I don't know. I always carry a copy of my passport with the stamp of entry. The stamp of entry can be very faint and hard to read so I also carry my boarding pass to CR which is definitive proof of your date of entry. Also at times the airport has a small print in English on one side and Spanish on the other side saying that you should put your passport in a safe and carry a copy. I also carry this. To sum it up, I carry a copy of my passport, the airplane boarding pass and the small piece of paper saying you should carry a copy of your passport.

I was sitting in the Blue Marlin Bar with the company of 2 young ladies @ 6 pm when 20 Policia not imigration came into the Hotel Del Ray and Blocked all the exits. I only saw them check the ladies IDs not any gringos. The only people that got there panties in a bunch were the gringos that were trying to high tail it out of the Hotel like it was on fire. The Hotel Del Rey staff and Polica told them they could leave in 30 minutes. I found it very amusing while I was drinking my beer. My chica was asked for her ID 4 times by 4 different cops in a 45 minute time span,no big deal. The Del Ray turned into a major sausage fest after the raid. I returned later that night and it was almost business as usual seems like the Chica Alert went out to tell all the hot Columians to stay home!

Law officers conduct major sweeps in parts of San José

More than 100 police officers mounted on trucks or motorcycles, riding in vans and other vehicles descended on sections of San José Friday night and Saturday morning.

They arrested four men who had outstanding arrest warrants, and they detained 48 persons as suspected illegal residents.

In the raid most of interest to expats, the security minister, Janina del Vecchio personally directed a sweep of the Hotel Del Rey, its casino and its bar about 7 p.m. Friday night. They were there about 45 minutes.

Participating were Fuerza Pública officers, the Policía de Migración, the Policía Municipal, the Policía del Tránsito, the Policía de Control de Drogas and tactical squad members with their faces covered in ski masks.

The motorized force blocked and cordoned off Calle 9 from Avenida 3 to Avenida 1 and the north lane of Avenida 1.

But the results were poor at the Del Rey. Only three women were found to be suspected immigration violators.

ONE SAYS THEY CHECKED THEIR ID SEVERAL TIMES AND THE OTHER SAYS THEY CHECKED ID OF THE GIRLS ONLY AND DID NOT CHECK THE GRINGOS. ARE THERE ANY OTHER WITNESSES THAT CAN CLARIFY WHAT THEY WERE LOOKING FOR OTHER THAN ILLEGAL CHICAS?

my copy of my passport did not have a face pic, but the lady officer asked which flt I came in on, made a call and said nothing further
although we were asked several times for our ID we just said we showed it already.

I really thought your post was particularly germane Bilko: Good thing they are concentrating on important things and not wasting time with serial murder/robberies.

You make what you measure. It's small wonder Costa Rica is heading toward out of control crime.

I was there. There were at least 50-70 police from at least three jurisdictions. The Honchos seemed to be the OIJ guys. They had a sheaf of warrants with pictures and seemed to be looking for particular individuals including some men (I saw some of the pictures). They had their own cameraman taking videos of Ms del Vecchio.

They checked some of the men sitting in the Lobby Bar but didn't check any of the three men at my table (all light haired...men they checked were dark haired).

This didn't seem like the normal immigration raid to me. Normally, they conduct those later when the place is jumping. Seemed like they had data that the people they wanted had been there during the early evening so that is when they did their thing.

Who knows? Maybe they were looking for bad guys...

If you read the whole article you'll see they did other roundups in some of the slums too. I really doubt the kind of thugs they were after would be lounging in the Dey Rey, but who knows? I know I'd certainly prefer to be inside the Del Rey than in Barrio Cuba or Hatillo.
