Has anyone used this charter service? I have been offered a great price on the Bluefin II for next week.

Bluefin is a very popular name for sportfishing companies. I know of a Bluefishing Charters in SouthWest Florida, another one in the Northern Abacos Bahamas, and another one in Point Judith Rhode Island. Which one are you talking about?

Yes, very much so.

The 2 most common charter fishing names are "Bluefin" and "Obsession" Charters. It's kinda like the "John Smith" of sportfishing! In CR, I've seen two different boats named "Bluefin", one was from Quepos, and the other was from Carillo. But I'd be willing to bet that there's another one in Los Sueños Marina.

It's kinda like asking if anyone knows the chica that works in the BM who has dark hair and bolt ons!

Its located in Quepos. One report I was given is that they are a good company but mainly a spanish speaking crew. Customer service is not up to US standards according to the feedback I recieved, but the price is right for me since I am bringing my dad and will be paying for most of the charter myself. I've seen the Bluefin boats while offshore fishing in CR. Don't know much about the company itself, but apparently they know where the fish are. What kind of price did they give you for the charter?

They quoted me 20% off on their Bluefin II boat. A total price of $636 for a full day offshore for a specific date next week. Actually the price before the discount was a little lower then what is listed on the website., A mainly spanish speaking crew isn't a problem for me since I am learning spanish and my dad prbably knew how to speak spanish before english.

I guess I should jump on the offer and book it.

That's definitely a good price for a full day. Have a great time and let us know how you did. Reports lately show that the Sailfish / Marlin bite is still South of Quepos, down towards the Osa Peninsula and into Panama. But you should still do good.

Thank you MG, but I hear Mahi Mahi is a great fighting fish. Not to mention you get to keep and eat them. Yum yum!!

I do hope to hook up and catch a marlin or sailfish. I haven't fished much and never for billfish so I don't know what the chances are for me to land one, but hope to have fun either way.

Most crews will put out a standard spread of baits, targeting billfish. But the same baits will also catch Mahi, Wahoo & Tuna by default. Regardless, you should have a good time. Just about any fish you hook out there will be strong enough to put you on your knees! Enjoy yourself!

MG what is the customary crew tip in Costa Rica? Have you stayed at the Best Western Kamuk?

I went out of Los Suenos on a vendor/ customer trip. My first time for billfish and I am certainly not a "fisherman". But I had a blast. Don't worry about "catching" anything. The crew does everything except reel. And reel is what you will do if you get a whack at a Marlin or Sail. My arms were screaming when the sail I reeled finally got to the boat.

We also hit a school of Dorado on the way back in, caught a crap load in 20 mins! The crew cleaned it all before we got to the dock and we took enough for us to take to a restaurant in Jaco and cook for us. I think just about any seafood place will do taht for you. They grilled and did some blackened. Served it with rice and beans. Have fun and remember...Tight Lines. Well you won't have to remember that part, the Capt. will be screaming it enough at you

Customary tip is 15 % of the cost for the day, regardless of what you catch. But if you have a great day, and you see the crew working their ass off for you, trying to get lots of fish in the boat, constantly offering to get you food, beer, water, cleaning/filet'ing all your fish, etc.. then 20 - 25 % is more like it. And like Tstef mentioned - they will do everything for you, including hooking the fish. All you have to do is eat, drink, relax, and when they hook a fish - just grab the rod and TURN THE HANDLE!

BTW... I've never been to the Best Western Kamuk.
