Read that too, I was hoping that Cuscatlan wouldn't go down the same route as the others, but I guess with the Citibank purchase it was inevitable.

Really though, anyone who has considered CR a tax shelter for the last 5 years has been kidding themselves.

Grand Cayman awaits......and I am not afraid of my "ip" being tagged.

One simply knows how to operate when on Grand Cayman.

I am a new person to the ways of Costa Rica Ticas.....but they are a heck of lot cheaper than my personal holdings....and identification of my "IP" address just makes me quake with fear.

Any idiot that had money in Costa Rica and thought it was "safe" is...well...just an idiot.

Remember.....Grand Cayman awaits but BE CAREFUL which bank you choose!!!!!! It's so much fun knowing something that I do not know relative to the "scene" in Costa Rica. I'm so glad I am a "bargain shopper" when it comes to disposable assets!! ahhahaahhahahaha.....

still....I arrive Feb. 11 and depart Feb. 21 and will appreciate any and all help I can get relative to the Costa Rica Tica scene. You can ask me any and all questions about how to protect your real assetts.....it ain't your male member, either.

I went to Banco Cuscatlan in SJO a few days ago, and withdrew a good chunk of change. They didn't ask me to sign anything (yet). We'll see what happens when I try it again in 3 weeks.

I can offer some paranoid observations regarding these issues.

First: You have to absolutely believe me when I tell you that any personal financial data isn't personal to the governments of the world. If you're living in 1970, then I applaud you for your psychosis. The three strikes were, in order:

The S&L Fiasco (established accountability and investigatory process)
Federal Banking Law Addendums (established electronic records access of information to/from the IRS [and now via the FBI])
    and (drum roll please....)
    the USA PATRIOT ACT.

You are completely, utterly and endlessly - phucked.

The sad and emerging reality is that money kept in banks is lovely as long as you don't want people asking you questions about that money. And now effectively, the governments of the world have utmost power to ask and receive answers to those questions. Does it appear any different?

Privacy can be bought. Honestly, the prices fluctuate and you may have to buy from 3rd/4th/5th parties those pieces of the privacy puzzle you desire, but it is possible both in the virtual/electronic realms and in the real/tangible realms. PM me for info on the latter, it's what I do.

I know I sound like a conspiracy theory nut, and I'm sure I'm going to get a whole bunch of "Prove its!". I will not. The news, media and current events should show you the intent of our government and others. I'm just very saddened that it has come down to this, but I'd rather have 100% of the ugly truth than 200% of a pretty lie.

What about Swiss Bank Accounts?
There have been no mention in this thread about them.

Are they a viable alternative?

Not sure how you came by the information ZeeBraWon but you are correct. Maybe you are one of the very few who actually read all or parts of it. Most people did not pay attention to the Patriot Act including those who voted for it. Any politician who did not vote for it would have been seen as . . . UN-Patriotic, a real campaign issue at the time.

The arm of the US is long and reaches into the most obscure and remote places of the earth. The CR has been clear about setting up a relationship with the IRS. I think the IRS updated the CR computer systems in trade for cooperation and access. My guess is that someone from the IRS is monitoring this thread.

I used to teach a class on basic finances, not investing or anything complicated, but simple simple stuff like family budgeting, how to use personal credit, and taxes. I always stressed NEVER, NEVER, NEVER try to cheat the IRS. They have ways of finding out what you are doing and then phucking you to your knees like no one else can.

The IRS doesn't care who you are or where you make income, they just want their piece.

Think of this, Congressman Charlie Rangel, one of the most powerful guys on the Hill just paid $10,800 in back taxes to the State of New York and the IRS for rental income on his villa in the Dominican Republic.

There is still a lot of wiggle room here though.... Having multiple corporations, bank accounts and other little tricks still make CR relatively private if you do your homework.

Bank accounts held by SA corps are about the only way to go. If you have the balls, have a trusted attorney be the signator on the account. I would recommend using an institution that doesn't have US branches. I had considered doing it but just too much hassle.

That is more or less the essence of Paul Kennedy’s class text entitled The Rise and Fall of the Great Powers. In the book he traces the rise and fall of great and near great powers from 1500 to 2000. He draws conclusions which were not specifically intended for the US in 2008. The original text was published in 1987 and later revised. Nevertheless the conclusions and comparisions of other failed great powers are remarkably similar to what seems to be occurring to the US in the world today.

Specifically, the over extension of a nation’s military presence will strain the nation’s economic power leading to an economic collapse. The economic collapse of the nation strains the ability to sustain the extended military deployments. It is like a downward spiral.

That is exactly what happened to Great Britain. That is why is no long Great, it is simply the United Kingdom. At one time it really did rule the world.

Some great posts here. The last act of "treason" to destroy a country is to loot the Treasury. Anyone else think that's taking place today??
