As I just posted in another thread, I had my pockets picked yesterday. I had my small Zony 'Cybershot' in my front pocket. They got it and I NEVER FELT A THING.
If you bring a camera here, bring a cheap one and do not carry it where it can be seen; hell I guess "do not carry it at all".

Wow. They were good if you didn't feel that being lifted. Lucky it was only your camera.

Sony Handy cam for the videos, Olympus for work and the Costa Rica trips. Planning on geeting the Sony with the 35mm lens Weis I think.

I own a Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ8 which hit the market last year for around $500. I bought it mail-order through 42nd Street Camera and Video for $225 a few months after it was released. Here is a review:

http://www.steves-digicams.com/2007_reviews/fz8.html

It is a point and click camera, but also has all the horns and bells for manual control. The camera features a 12X optical zoom and OIS or optical image stabilization for those of us with shakey hands. The camera does a nice job on close-up, portrait and indoor shots. It fits comfortably in your hand and the joystick control is an added plus. The downsides include: it is large and somewhat bulky (you need to carry it around your neck) and the camera only does a fair job with outdoor landscape shots.

Canon S3, higher end P&S with full manual controls and a lot of zoom, $180 or so used on Ebay or there may be some new or refurbs floating around. Beats the pocket cams I have owned. Newer version is the S5.

There is a lot to be said for those one time use cameras.

I always use a waterproof one for any outings where it might be exposed to water (e.g w/w rafting and, on my last CR trip, w/w tubing). I've even used them on scuba trips down to 30m even though the package only recommends them to 10. For normal shots, they don't work quite as well as fancier more expensive cameras, but they work well enough AND you don't have to care that much if they get phucked up by the water.

For dry land activities, I confess I don't normally use the disposibles, but I don't go superfancy either. Let's face it most of us are not Ansel Adams and most of what we take are really just snapshots. If you really see yourself as an artist (or are going to blow your pictures up to poster size), then by all means get one of those fancy megamegapixel cameras with multiple manual settings and SLR. Just be very careful carrying it around. Five years ago when digital cameras were first coming out 3 megapixel seemed like more than enough and, despite those cameras having since been left in the dust, they really still are for most of us.

IMHO, a small discreet size is much more important than all those other bells and whistles. And that pretty much completely rules out DSLR's in the sketchy urban setting of San Jose. The tricky part is finding your personal preferred balance between small size and small cost as those 2 attributes tend to be inversely related. An expensive microsized camera maybe easier to hide from the bad guys, but when they hold you up they're likely to find it anyway and losing it will hurt that much more. Losing a relatively inexpensive $100 camera will hurt too, but not nearly as much, and some can be found that, while not the absolutely smallest, are small enough that they can be slipped into a zippered pocket without too much bulge.

My other tips? One, never even bother taking a camera out after dark. Leave it back in your room safe and just take it out of there later when you get back with your novia de la noche if you want to snap some pics to remember her by. The streets of SJ after dark are just too dangerous after dark for anything more expensive than beer money. Two, unless you're packing a cheap disposible or are out of SJ touring the country, don't carry your camera around most of the time during the day in SJ. If you're doing a photo safari one day, that's one thing. If you're making a trip to an MP and think you can sneak one in to snap a pic of your pick (something that is also much easier to do with a camera that is much smaller than those disposibles), then that is another thing as well. But then stop back by your hotel room afterwards to drop off your camera rather than carrying it around unnecessarily.

I have had a Canon PowerShot SD20 for years. It is 3 ½ by 1 ¾ by 5/8 inches. It has a rechargeable battery and I have never filled the 1 gig chip.
