An interesting post from Haywood Jablommi and on point. It is important for our comments to be legible but that is a function of typing in the words. Our posts should also be intelligible, rational and germane.

I don’t think anyone particularly minds if there are some grammatical errors, spelling errors or even the dreaded typographical blunders. Many of us sometimes use grammatical and spelling errors deliberately as part of a specific writing style.

My belief is that Rainman3 was talking about some of the very few, who post absolutely nonsensical entries which ramble on and on ad nauseam. You would think they were CRT versions of the numerous disjointed incoherent letters to the editor of The Tico Times. None of those presently posting on this thread are included in that observation.

Grammatical and typographical errors are easily overlooked, but irrational comments, perhaps made in a drunken stupor, are something quite different. To me, the latter is the sentiment to which Rainman3 was referring.

I don't know if I could have said it better myself. Probably not.

Spelling errors and poor grammar do not bother me as long as I'm able to get the point of the post without spending too much time deciphering it. OTOH, I usually completely ignore posts, usually newbie trip reports, that are very long, with no punctuation or separation of paragraphs. All I see is 'blah blah blah blah...... ."

Gracias Ciaociao,

That is especially what I was talking about. Sometimes things like that just make some post totally unreadable.

My typing sometimes produces a few errors, bt, I think most appreciated readable text without gobbledegook. There are a couple of regular posters who make me wonder what kinda mushrooms they are ingesting

Technically, I think we are discussing syntax.

Quote:
In linguistics, syntax (from Ancient Greek συν- syn-, "together", and τάξις táxis, "arrangement") is the study of the principles and rules for constructing sentences in natural languages. In addition to referring to the discipline, the term syntax is also used to refer directly to the rules and principles that govern the sentence structure of any individual language, as in "the syntax of Modern Irish". Modern research in syntax attempts to describe languages in terms of such rules. Many professionals in this discipline attempt to find general rules that apply to all natural languages. The term syntax is also sometimes used to refer to the rules governing the behavior of mathematical systems, such as logic, artificial formal languages, and computer programming languages.

I wonder if the reference to sentence structure includes the use of paragraphs.

Just wanted to bring this up and hear some thoughts and opinions from the brotherhood. I always appreciate it when members share helpful iinformation or trip reports that are interesting and well written.

With that being said and not trying to flame anyone in particular it seems like we have so many members who have writing skills that would drive a 4th grade English teacher to the brink of suicide. Many times these posters have great info to share but their writing skills are so poor that it almost devalues what they want to tell us.

I for one really am thankful for those that take a little extra time to proof read and follow the basic rules. By doing this they are making things much easier and more pleasant for forum readers.

Yes it has been more than 20 years since I took a college English course but I do try to take one minute to proof read. My biggest petpeeve is t the guys who post 500 plus words with never a break just one line after another. You know the ones where you need tofollow the words with your cursor or you loose your place.

Once again I am thankful for the info but come on guys do everyone a favor and proof read and clean it up a little before you hit the submit button.

after meeting many of the guys from the board and others from the DR, SL and other fine establishments
...I believe they are doing the best they can with their spelling, grammar and punctuation...

Agree with Haywood,

The point of the boards (IMHO) is to share information and provide some comradeship. Everyone has their own level of writing, impacted by time, patience, alcohol, education, practice etc. etc. Bottom line is - I'm after content, not a novel written by an English scholar.

Yale undergrad then Harvard Business School and he still can’t utilize multi-syllable words. The best "education" money can buy.

So when he is out of the presidency, where will the late night comedians get fodder for their skits? There is hope! Sarah Palin.

The amazing thing about Sarah Palin is that she is actually less qualified than Dan Quayle was. I salute McCain for pulling off the impossible. Not to be partisan or get off topic. I believe my grammar is passable today.
