I just bought a $100 pilot's sized carry on bag with wheels. It will save me time and a future fortune in checked bag fees. At Castillo, I paid about $9 for a weeks worth of ironed laundry, but the convenience was great. To add insult to injury, I traveled on frequent flyer miles and paid $30.70 rt.

Well done! That's what I call rollin wi' the punches! :D

El Viejo Was the $30.70 for U.S. taxes or some kind of a processing fee that Continental charged?

Ciaociao32001 are there different levels of elite status?

Yes, Continental has three level of elite status. Each one giving you a few more benefits from the previous.

IMO Continental has the best program by far. I think they're the most generous in terms of the amount of miles they give you as well as upgrading you without having to request it. Although, they are restructuring the elite bonus miles.

I fly about 250K to 300K miles per year on Continental and am more than happy with their service/FF program.

After my next flight I think I will be a low level Elite. Guess I better find out what that entitles me to.

I can tell you. For a 'silver elite,' which you will be, you will be given free upgrades to FC if there is a seat available, and after platinum and golds. For many routes, that means nothing because sufficient people pay for first class. However, HOU to SJO is not a well trodden businessman route. Therefore, there aren't usually that many paid first class seats nor are there many other elites flying and I almost always get an upgrade. Also, if you fly first from SJO to HOU and have a layover, you get use of the president's club lounge. Also there are some fees you don't pay such as baggage fees. However, for other fees (refund, exhange etc) fees are reduced for silvers, but not to the extent of platinum and gold. Finally, you get 150% extra miles for paid travel.

I think you mean that you get 50% extra miles above the actual miles flown. Next year the benefit will be reduced to 25% at the silver level. Gold will remain at 100% bonus but Platinum will be reduced from 125% to the same 100% you get with Gold. At Gold you also get an additional upgrade (for a "companion"). No additional upgrade at Platinum. Go for Gold!

You are correct. Silvers currently get 150% of paid miles (which is 50% extra like you said) and will get 125% next year. I also think platinums are charged some lower refund fees and also get free use of the presidents club at all times as well as priority over golds and silvers as to available upgrades. Gold is the new platinum, but I would certainly take platinum if offered.

Platinums still have to pay for a membership to the Presidents Club. It's cheaper though.

It's true that they still have to pay to become a member of the President's Club, however they don't have to be a member to access the clubs. Platinum elites can access President's clubs and all other Sky Team lounges for free when traveling internationally (including SJO) on a Sky Team flight on the same day of travel.

I agree. Gold is the biggest bang for the buck, but its worth it too me to go for Platinum.

I wasn't aware of that...oh well...my company has been buying the memberships, not me.

I only fly American Airlines out of Miami when going to CR. I've had no issues with them at all so it's one of those, "if it ain't broke don't fix it" kind of things.

But I get shitty miles. Its something like 1250 each way. I have to fly 20 times to even worry about any "status".

Are you guys saying Continental would credit me more miles per trip?

I don't know shit about this stuff...

Florida brother,

Get yourself an AA SkyMiles Credit Card and use the Card for everything....you get a mile for every dollar you charge...plus I think they are giving out like 20k miles upon approval and there is no fee the first year. I used AA miles to go to MDE..think it was 30 or 35k but if I paid cash it would have been $634! From MIAMI no less! LADRONES!! Anyway check it out...

Mucho Gusto plays the same game I believe and does quite nicely...

Another alternative is to check up on SPIRIT. Yeah you'll have to get your ass up to Broward, but... They do the same card deal but give you 50k instead of 20 k and if you play Spirit right you can get some insane fares. Last trip got their $9 fares both ways paid $79.02 all in. My Halloween trip coming up I paid $135. I've taken 4 free trips in a year and a half and have 50k miles in the bank... put up with the occasional BS but bottom line is you save $$$.

Sweet. I think I'll look into that AA credit card. Even though I currently have like 10k miles I'm sure they would transfer those miles correct?

I guess I'll hit up the AA website and apply for that card, thanks bro.

Wondering how this is all going to shake out. I am a gold with Northwest, which translates into gold privileges with Continental due to Northwest's ownership of "golden shares" in Continental. Now Continental is moving from Skyteam to Star Alliance and will most likely divorce itself from its marriage with Northwest if NW merges with Delta. And then there are the rumors of Continental's merger with United if it is free from Northwest's control. I think I just threw up in my mouth a little. Looks like I will be booking my next trip with Delta.

SR

From what I understand...Continental and United have no interest in merging. What they are going to do is form a "strategic alliance." Basically what that means is that they will codeshare and will both be Star Alliance. Of course, all this depends on the NW/Delta merger. But, obviously, the airline industry changes daily so we'll see what happens.

Don'y know if you have much experience with Delta but IMO they're the worst airline in the world and I've flown almost all of them. If it comes down to me either flying Delta and getting my Onepass miles or flying someone else and not getting miles...I say phuck the miles. But that's just me...I earn more miles than I can use as it is.
