From AM Costa Rica:

Trio of robbers sticks up restaurant, but one suspect is caught
By the A.M. Costa Rica staff

As families enjoyed Easter dinner in a Curridabat restaurant Sunday night, armed men in hoods burst through the front doors and demanded money from frightened customers and the cashier, said a security ministry spokesman Monday.

The men got away with 6 million colons ($12,000) in cash, along with customers' cell phones, wallets and jewelry, said a Fuerza Pública spokesman.

Police arrived at the restaurant, El Bálcon de Mariscos, as the holdup was taking place, said Héctor Guerrero Gómez, chief of operations in Curridabat. The three robbers arrived in a car but were forced to escape on foot when Fuerza Pública officers arrived, said Guerrero. “Seven officers were chasing the robbers on foot and 10 more arrived during the chase,” said Guerrero.
The officers cornered one young suspect in an abandoned lot and afterwards the boy was identified by victims of the robbery. The suspect is a 16-year old boy and is being held by authorities. The minor carried a pistol, a knife, a ski-mask and a sweatshirt at the time of arrest, said a Fuerza Pública spokesman.

During the robbery the men used hooded sweatshirts, and their faces were only partially covered, said Guerrero. The other two robbers are presumed to be adults, according to Guerrero. Police were unable to capture them and no further arrests have been made since the incident.

Police officers from San Pedro, Desamparados, Zapote, and Curridabat showed up at the scene, said Guerrero.

The case has been sent to the Judicial Investigation Organization for investigation.

Princesa Marina for me as well...I think there are two..I know the one by Parque Central. Try to get there on off hours. Only place better for seafood is Playa Azul in Nicaragua.

I think there are 4 La Princessa Marina restaurants and none of them are near parque central. I think you mean parque La Sabana.
You ,of course, are correct. I guess I'm a little foggy on my park names....sorry ;)

The consensus pick of this thread seems to be Balcon de Mariscos in Curridabat then Banco de Mariscos in Barva north of Heredia, with Tin Jo for a more limited seafood menu?
Has the Princesa Marina chain collapsed or is it still running?

Princessa Marina in Sabana and Alejuela are going strong so I would guess the one Curridabat is also open. Do not know about the one in Moravia were the problem was.

The Princessa Marina in Moravia was closed down about four months ago for food poisoning? It has recently re-opened and the problem is supposed to have been rectified. I have been a little reticent to go in since the re-opening because I knew a few people who went there and got food poisoning.

I agree that the Balcon de Mariscos in Curridabat is very good and very family oriented. You will not be embarrassed.

There is a small restaurant just down from the old Lincoln School in Moravia. It is on the left side of the road if you are going down hill at the first traffic signal. It is run by a Columbian family. It is not elegant but the food has been terrific each time I have gone there.

I have had three good seafood meals ths week at the newly opened Las Palmas Grill (formerly the Gardens) next to Castillo. Great food and these guys are trying hard to rebuild and attract a more upscale clientale after the old Gardens that was run into the ground by previous management. Give them a try.

Seafood is different than fresh fish. However, if you want fresh fish, there is a place above Coronado in the Patos de Agua called the Antigua Granja Lecheria (the old dairy farm) and indeed it is a converted diary farm. It is very rustic but nicely appointed with good service. It is a tico place because few Gringos live in that area and fewer would know how to get there.

They have fresh trout ponds inside the building. You can grab a Huckleberry Finn type fishing pole and catch a trout and they’ll cook it for you. A dinner for four including drinks cost me $50 including tax and tip. Great atmosphere and incredible scenery. Lots of fun. PM if you want directions.

There are trout (trucha in Spanish) farms scattered throughout the Orosi Valley. When I go there I take an ice chest and stop at one of them catch some fish (3200 crc per kilo a couple of month ago) have them cook some up for lunch and fillet the rest that I take home.

My current favorite is Truchas Kiri Tapanti which is located in Tapanti, Oroisi, Cartago but they are all basically the same deal. A trip through the Orosi valley with a stop at a trout farm for lunch is a great day excursion away from the gulch.

I went to a place like that in Orosi about 20 years ago. It was an old rock building and we had to cross a creaky old bridge to get there. The restaurant had an old swimming pool and picnic area. Have no idea the name of the place.

Anyway the waiter asked me what size fish I wanted. A few minutes later I saw a guy with a pole and a bucket heading for the river. Really cool place. Thanks for reminding me.

Have you ever been to the hot springs in Cartago?
