I'll apologize ahead of time if I missed this type recomendation in another thread.
I would like to visit a clean, capable, inexpensive dentist during my upcoming trip for a teeth cleaning only. It would be nice if it was in walking distance of the gultch, but not a specific requirement. Also, is it fairly easy to get an appt. on short notce? Finally, HOT ticas working in the offide is always a bonus!!!!!!!

Finally, does any one have any general health thoughts on having your teeth cleaned, and then getting steamy with a chica within the next 24 hrs., during the period of time that your mouth is healing from the scrubbing. In other words, are you a lot more apt to put yourself in more danger with DFK and other fun oral stuff while your mouth may still be microscopically bleeding?

Two more weeks and I'll finally be back.

I like Dr. Sergio Chen. Do a search, you'll get a ton of info.

Recent dental work never stopped me from DFK and DATY.

Thanks for the info. Dr Chen sounds worthy of a try. It's hard to like any dentist. However, I had my teeth cleaned by a Hot spinner in Thailand last summer for $15. I thought the office was nicer than my OLD, as in FORMER dentist in USA.

I think I've now figured out the CRT search feature. Thanks again

You will not find Dr. Chen a hot spinner.

You will not find Dr. Chen's office a luxury space age clinic.

What you will find is a very good, polite (almost to a fault) dentist with an office from the 80's who will give you quality service at Tico pricing. He is busy and you can make an appointment or just walk in either way take a book. At times you can wait 10 minutes other times an hour it just depends on his workload at that time.

He is on calle 6 between avenida 4 y 6. 2222-0063/2233-27036. Mon-Fri 8am 7pm. Sat. 8 am 3 pm

If you find LeGrillion on the map, Dr. Chen's office is two-three doors north of it on the same side of the street.

It is a white building, and if I remember right red trim. Ring the bell and they will buzz you in.

Great recomendation, I like simple and I like polite a lot, not to mention tica pricing and even better directions. Tell a fellow mongerer @ a place near the La Grillion and he says " Oh yeah, I know where that is" every time. Thanks again guys. CRT Rules!!!!!!!!!!!n

I find ID's recommendation of the obsequious Dr. Chen sort of surprising. Sure, he HAD been the leading cheerleader for Dr. Chen's services here on this board. But just 2 months ago he made this post (or did he already forget?):
Irish Drifter wrote:
Unfortunately I have been receiving some information concerning Dr. Chen that is very disturbing.

Two individuals who have been going to Dr. Chen before I did, and indeed recommended him to me, reported some concerns so serious on their last visit that they have stopped going to him.

The first thought that Dr. Chen acted somewhat confused and not really aware of what he was doing.

The second gentleman felt that Dr. Chen was having trouble controlling his hand movements and might be showing earl signs of Parkinson disease.

I would suggest that everyone be very cautious if they choose to see Dr. Chen. I reluctantly have to withdraw my recommendation of using his services.

I went to Dr. Chen back in July, largely based upon ID's formerly numerous glowing and over the top recommendations. About the only thing he hadn't included in those older recommendations was any mention of a special "Soprano discount" :P. I wasn't going for anything major like a crowning or root canal, just a filling, a cleaning and a check up. I'll let you read about my horror story in the links below, but let me say something about the cleaning and dental check. The "dental check" did not include ANY x-rays and was the most cursory probing of my mouth that I've ever experienced at a dentist before (lasting no more than 60 seconds). The "dental cleaning" was not much better. In fact, I left the office not even sure I had received a cleaning. certainly not with that nice smooth pearly feeling that I usually have on my teeth after they've been cleaned back in the US. Dr. Chen did do a "flouride bath" of my teeth, ultrasound cleaning (maybe, again not sure), but definitely no flossing, buffing or polishing.

But at least with just a simple cleaning, it would be hard for Dr. Chen to do much damage. If you're planning to get anything more complex done, then you best be very wary. Here are my promised links:

www.costaricaticas.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?p=244650 Dr. Chen Revisited
www.costaricaticas.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=22635 Dr. Chen's prices

I don't know how "hot" they are but if you want a tica dentista that also does a great job, you should try Dra. Susanah Zomer, who was mentioned in that 2nd link, or Dra. Yalile Sauma Sanchez, who has been recommended by many CRTers (most notably by Don Gordo himself). Now that you have some specific names, you shouldn't have any trouble using the forum search feature to find your own links and info on them.

Pro,

I did not forget at all. I subsequently visited Dr. Chen personally as well as talked to 3 other people who visited Dr. Chen, over a 5 week period, all of who reported they found no problems.

That is an insulting and outrageous insinuation. Most people who have gone to Dr. Chen I know only by their CRT screen name and they know me only by the same and we have never met each other personally. I challenge you to find one person who I ever asked to tell Dr. Chen I referred them. I have never mentioned to Dr. Chen that I have sent a number of people to him and I pay the same fees and any other patient

You are not satisfied with the service you received from Dr. Chen voice those concerns here on the forum, as you have, so the brotherhood can get both sides of the picture. Most people I have referred to Dr. Chen have been very happy with the results. Those that are not act like adults and move on rather then try to caste doubt on what motivates someone to recommend a service to others.

At Tico pricing? Not exactly. It may seem like Tico pricing to gringos who are used to paying a lot more for dental work, but it's still not Tico pricing. For example, Tico pricing is 5,000¢ ($9) for a filling, Chen charges gringos $20.

You are using a narrow definition of "Tico pricing". There are Dentists with a Tico patient base who charge 5,000c just as there are those who charge 30,000c to Ticos.

Dr. Chen has the same rate for Tico patients and gringo patients. In my book that is "Tico pricing" your definition may be different.

I e-mailed Dr. Chen last night with a request for an appt. I awoke this morning to find a promptly returned e-mail with a confirmation of my desired date and time. I was quite pleased and happy until I logged back onto CRT and read the last few posts. Yet, I'm only going for a basic cleaning, so no biggie. Furthermore, I'm sure I know exactly where his office is located, and as stated previously, politeness & good English go a long way in my book. I'll re-post after my visit on 9-25 with my review of his service. Thanks again for all of the info.

Joe,

Make sure you request DR. SERGIO CHEN. Dr. Chen is in practice here with his brother [whose name escapes me]. SERGIO Chen is the preferred dentist.

As for "hot ticas" working in his office....there used to one, Gabriella, but they tell me she has since married, had a baby, and left the office. :(
I haven't been there in over a year....maybe he's gotten a new one. :)
