Fares dropped for me in Sept. and with the Amistad's 35% discount, I'm doing my 14th trip, spending 16 days at the Amistad. I'll be spending lots of time at the new new ZB/LH, but will pop into the SL as well, and will be rafting the Pacuare again as well, plus whatever other rivers are available. :D

Back in July the big rapids were running at class IV, so they will be great. Wild ride!

HT:

I'm curious about this wild river ride? Would you reccomend it for a novice? I've Kay-yaked for 20+ years, but never anywhere above a class 3, as I'm more of the slow, touring paddler. I've been rafting twice, but again the few short drops were always over in a 1/4 mile or less. I'm 45, and in good shape. I'm just skeptical about the safety factors of being in CR for high adventure. Thanks ahead of time for your opinons.

Also, Is this a SJO day trip kind of thing, or will it require more time away from the other wild rides, which I visit CR for?

GI Joe, I'm also a flatwater kayaker, and save the whitewater for guided trips. My previous experience before doing the Pacuare was oar-boats and J-rigs on the Colorado river (Westwater and Cataract canyons), so I was a bit nervous about paddle rafts, but it turned out fine. Rafts have cross-tubes in which you jam your feet under (people in front also have a floor pocket) to anchor yourself, plus the paddle also helps to brace yourself. Two trips already and I haven't fallen out. Anyone can do it, on my first trip the group I was included an old guy and a 20-something girl. :D On the last trip the guide actually had us get down into the bottom of the raft during several of the bigger rapids; less exciting but I guess more safe.

The river is very scenic, going through virgin rain forest and two canyons where all the big rapids are located; the second of which also has a very narrow but flatwater section. Lots of class IIs and IIIs before you get the IVs, most of which are quite visible and steep drops.

The trip is usually done in one day, you get back in time for evening activities. :D It also can be done as an overnighter, though the river distance you go done is the same.

Thanks for the well-informed sounding advice. I think I'll give a day trip a shot. It sounds like a lot of fun. Would you recomend a certain company or guide?

I always book trips through the hotel I'm staying at, last time it was the Amistad and I already forgot the name of the company they used. It was a good one, guide was great.

I'll be at the SL from the Sep. 27-30. I'm looking to go rafting one day. I've seen where there are class IV and class V :D rapids...I'm guessing this is dependant on the rain in the area?

My question is... What is the best company to go with to get the best tour/service?

If anyone is interested in joining, i'm planning on going rafting either the 28th or 29th of Sep...

I've read where it could be uncomfortable bringing a chica along for the ride...anyone have experience in this department?

I'm almost sure I'll be going out of SJO for 4 days in the middle of my 12 day trip. Unfortunately, that will be the 27th-30th. However my wing man will be in town thru the 29th and he may be into it. I'll mention it to him this week.

Personally, I don't want to have to worry about keeping a chica from drowning all day. Futhermore, if she turns out to be a girly girl and is not into the hot, sweaty, buggy river she may whine all day, while you p4 her time.

The 28th or 29th could work for me...it might be a time for a break from other activities. :D

The Guayabo section of the Reventazon has class Vs, so yes there are wilder rivers than the Pacuare. I think they are all rainfall-dependent, so the rainy season is best, but at times there can actually be too much water and the rafts don't go...only experienced kayakers.
