For the past few years I have heard different Board members referance a restaurant they called Pork Chop Hill. No one I knew had actually been there but all had heard good things about it. No one could tell me its real name or where it was , only that the pork was supposed to be out of this world. Thanks to Don Gordo , he was able to tell me it's name and location.

Last week , Myself , Patriot and four other hungry mongers hired a van to take us to Tarbaca for a late lunch at Donde Alcides. Its about an hour drive into the mountains but well worth the effort to get there. The interior of the restaurant is large, rustic, high ceilings, with floor to ceiling glass looking out from the mountain top. The interior is highlighted by a large wood burning grill on which a mountain of pork was sacrificed for our dining pleasure.

In our ignorance we ordered 3 extra grande platters of pork chop, 2 would have been plenty. I can say that this was the best pork chops I have ever tasted. They were huge, well charred,but still moist. They were all cut with the T Bone and the loin attached. Sides included roasted potatoes, Peppers, rice and Plantans roasted in their skin with butter and cheese that were awesome.

This may have been the best meal I've ever had in CR. I've ben to many of the top places in CR. This has become my new favorite.

I've been there numerous times......my favorite place to eat in Costa Rica. 8)

I don't know what you paid for the hired van ride there, but you can take the public bus to the restaurant for about one dollar each way. 8)

Lots of Miradors on the way to Donde Alcides (aka Pork Chop Hill,) 3km past Ram Luna which is about 3km outside of Asseri. The views of the Central Valley and San Jose are the best.

Stop at Ram Luna for a drink and the view but be sure to eat at Alcides.
I am not sure if it's true.... but supposedly they buy all the old fruit from the Central Market and feed it to the pigs.

Hands down the most lucious pork chops on the planet.

Hire a van and go in a group. Maybe even take some "company." Sundays are my favorite! Tons of Tico families chowin' down. It's a great opportunity to see middle class folks enjoying life.

Also, a great Sunday outing is on the nothern route to Turrialba. It's 20-30 minutes outside of Cartago. The scenic road follows a valley of one of Costa Ricas' most beautiful farming area.

The restaurant is a trout farm, "petting zoo." There's a duo playing guitars and doing vocals. Trout entero is fantastic! Again, a great chance to see middle class Tico families on a Sunday outing. The live music is great.

My GF loves to vist the barn and razz me about abandoning my wife and K*ds in the goat barn.

She explains, the K*ds(baby goats)..Whhhhheeeerrrrrrrrrrrres's mmmyyyy
Dddaaaaaaaaaddddddd?

I cannot remember the name of the place but am quite sure it's just past Pacaya on the right hand side.

Both are really nice opportunities to "get out of the gulch."

Zebra is right, the bus fare is about a dollar each way, quite a deal. Also, after your lunch as you walk a couple of hundred meters back to the bus stop there is a nice little Costa Rican Coffee House directly across the street from the bus stop. For about .65 cents you can have a great cup of coffee while you wait for the bus. This whole adventure is one of the cheapest and best little self guided day trips in CR!

Ditto on the coffee shop. Nice place. They grind and package their own coffee downstairs. After eating the pork chops, we always go here afterwards for cake and coffee. They have really good cakes. I always purchase a couple of bags of their organic coffee to bring back to the states. 8)

How about that bus fare?......hard to believe that you can ride the bus that distance for about a dollar. :)

Mmmmmmmmmm........................................pork chops. Try to get a female waitress.........the male waiter seemed to constantly screw up our order no matter how many times we tried to correct him (could have been the old "screw the gringos that are down here screwing our women" treatment because that makes more sense to me than it just being blatant incompetence).

The cake at the coffee place was pretty darn good too and they had about the best cup of coffee that I've had in Costa Rica (I'm no officianado de cafe).

Well, I arrive in CR tomorrow and at least on of my day trips will to to Donde Alcides. Where else can you have a day like that for less than $12 in total?

Mr. Black,

You catch the bus to Desemperados. I'm not good with directions and I always went there with a friend who knows the way....but you catch the bus at a location about 5 blocks down the hill from the Del Rey and then over about 2 blocks to the right.

And yes, $12.....give or take is a realistic number.

There were 7 of us and the bill came to 60,600 colones.This included several drinks each and a shot of Guaro for everyone.
