Look, I love the SL. Everybody loves the SL. It's my hotel of first choice when I travel to Costa Rica.

I was confronted with a couple problems in my room ("El Rey), and I want to tell you how the hotel handled them.

Problem 1: The room and sometimes the hall outside ) were permeated by what I can only describe as a dead fish odor. I do not agree with management's assessment that the smell came from the kitchen, which is very close to the room; if the fish smell came from the kitchen, I would expect other smells as well (bacon, coffee, fryer grease etc.). This odor to me smelled more like fish emulsion fertilizer, and since the next door neighbor was landscaping his lawn, this seemed a more logical explanation than grease traps or a bad ventilator in the kitchen. But hell, what do I know? What was done to resolve the problem? Bill told me that they cleaned the grease traps in the kitchen. Although I thought I smelled the odor afterwards, it was certainly better after they thoroughly cleaned the grease traps.

Problem 2: This one is more serious. I was in the suite three nights before I discovered that the keylock to the room's entry door was broken. The door would appear to lock, but a simple twist of the knob reopened the door. This means that anyone might have had access to my living space and my stuff until I discovered the malfunction. In fact, the discovery of a used condom on the bathroom floor was what prompted examination of the lock. I reported the problem to Carlos at the front desk and received adequate compensation, but I was never told the result of examination of the security camera tapes My belief is that some opportunistic hooker turned a trick in my room while I was occupied in the bar. It certainly was not Vera the room maid's fault; the bathroom floor was absolutely clean earlier in the day. The logical conclusion since the condom wasn't mine, is that the room was used by someone to knock off a chunk while I wasn't there. Thankfully, none of my possessions were touched. Once discovered, the lock problem was immediately repaired. And I mean immediately. Turns out it wasn't a lock problem at all, but a loose strike plate. Tightening two screws did the trick. :D

Finally, the terrace (and I wonder if that's a bad name for the space; it's more like a bodega attached to the kitchen) was almost unusable because of construction dust. It was not a pleasant sitting space. I don't blame housekeeping here; the amount of dust would have required an additional hour of cleaning per day to remedy. I therefore never complained about it.

On the plus side: SL continues to serve excellent food, offer great service and ambience, has the best English-speaking staff in the area and is just plain good. 24 hour armed security, great beds, good folks and very reasonable prices for gringo-style amenities bring me back to the SL again and again.

My suggestion to Bill would be this: I know you're preoccupied with building the mansion section and getting the permits etc. done, but the rest of your house could use a deep cleaning and some rudimentary maintenance. To my mind, there's no excuse for the broken room lock. While the permits for the newest section are being processed, how about paying some attention to cleaning, maybe some new linens/towels for the old section and the "new" section behind the bar? Just a thought.

I will stay at the SL again. I really love the place, and I know that any minor problems will be handled by management. Thanks SL people for another great stay. Asta... I want to have your baby.

I like the food at the Sportsmen's, but don't eat there anymore. About a year ago, I was at the Sportsmen's and ordered a cheeseburger and fries. After waiting one hour for the food to arrive, I asked the female manager [??] where my food was. She re-ordered the food for me, which came fairly promptly.....at about the same time the first order showed up. :?

Also....One other time, a waitress added a "Bailey's" onto my bill. Could have been an honest mistake......but my gut feeling at the time is that it wasn't. It was difficult reading the laser printed bill, because the print was SO faded......couple that with the low lighting, and it was very difficult to read the bill.

EL C,
El Rey has always been my room of choice, in fact I will be staying there in about 9 days. I hope the odor problem is gone. I can't believe someone would have the balls to use your room with you in the bar that is quite bizarre!! I do like the patio and spend quite a few evenings out there entertaining, the only complaint I had was bar noise, twice there have been incidents with drunks @ the bar causing a commotion and the glass doors were open, both times it was early in the morning.
There were a few CRT'ers around to witness these fools and they finally were asked to leave.
I'm sure Bill will fix whatever is wrong, it's still my favorite place to stay, after all what else is there???
Regards, 911 Driver

Cons: The rooms in the public area are just too noisy. Tranqulidad room is dark with little lighting. The lock is a joke on that room as well as many others. Fiesta room is downright depressing. You hear every high heel chica walking past your room. Windows face out into the common hallway. Not to mention the ice machine this is 4 feet from the bed. Not too good to hear shoveling ice into a pail.

The bar register slips are impossible to read. I agree with last poster on that. Always light imprint on those tabs.

They use the same shot glass for all liquor and simply keep it in a bowl of water. (To keep it” clean) Who needs other liquor including Jaeger interfering with taste of scotch?

The petite bar girl always puts a nicely wrapped napkin around the mouth of the bottle of beer. The other bartenders are too lazy to do it.

When you order food, better not do it when one particular bar maid is eating her own free food. It is like you are inconveniencing her.

Ever notice the Tica pricing for food as compared to yours? Or drink price?

Ticas should never be using the internet. I have seen it where two ticas were on for 40 minutes. WTF?

Pros

Security is excellent.

The have a garage for your car.

Food is pretty good.

Rooms are clean and a/c works well.

Nice place to stay without having to deal with tico trash outside the HDR.

Ladies are friendlier and do not do hard sell.

Owners are very eager to help.

Front desk is great. In addition, they always offer a higher exchange rate than La Amistad and other hotels.

Livery service is the best. Who needs a crazy cab driver who gets lost?

Better music at SL.

Laundry service is great, although they do charge per piece.
La Amistad is “propina” only.

Best place to get a few drinks under your belt and not having to worry about getting “home.”

Breakfast is good. Yogurt, banana, coffee etc etc...Excellent light breakfast.

You say that they "wash" drink glasses in just a bowl of water and your biggest concern is tasting another liquor? How bout tasting the jizz that a working girl was washing out with the last drink.

Not always. In April, I stayed at Amistad. At SL, I got 485 at SL and 490 at Amistad, but they never had enough colones to change more than $40.

They use one shot cup/glass and dump it into water which gets the color and taste of all liquor served. That has nothing to do with pu*sy.

a drink is a drink and pu*sy is not within the same venue. but, your pedestrian tastes are duly noted.

I witnessed the smell and the lock problem first hand (not that anyone doubts El C). Bill is a great host and I will definitely stay at the SL again. I don't think I would stay in the Fiesta room again though. It had a dead cockroach in one of my nightstand drawers. It also had a musty smell that didn't really go away during my 3 night stay in that room. There was also a flooding issue the last night, but it rained like crazy- so I understand. One night they had all the lights in the clubhouse area off and I couldn't see a thing. Had to feel my way to the room. Not big issues- especially for the price of the rooms in the clubhouse section. I had a much better experience in the Las Palmas room my previous 2 nights. I will only stay in the new wing from now on or possibly the new mansion rooms which are gorgeous.....

I see your point. I try not to kiss them unless I catch them at 7 am and they are fresh from home. Your point is well taken.

I think I did list the pros and cons spot on, so to speak.

Being a good drinker and liking the taste, I always like fresh ice, really clean glasses..preferably not washed with detergent and a good pour.

Much like liking a slit on a pu*sy that needs exploration before showing its lips..each to his own, one mans poison is another man's ambrosia.

I have always heard nothing but the best about Bill and his business but if my room isn't safe........does the rest really matter? If a guy needs a quick room....I don't mind helping a buddy out as long as I can get fresh sheets LOL but to not ask and then leave a condom in my room? Not cool !

Anyone have an idea of when these new rooms will be open and what the rates will be? Are they still being constructed?

They were hoping in a couple weeks. The rooms were pretty much done, but they were working on one of the entrance hallways when we got a little tour. Its a very nice setup and some fine craftsmanship. From about $120 (for the most basic room) -$160 or so (for the 2 bedroom suite) if I remember correctly. Things could change though......

i wrote a few posts about someone with a key to my room and he unlocked the door and walked right in, took a look at me and a quick look at my ipod and booze and acted like it was a mistake , front desk did very little to make me feel that it was a honest mistake or they were at fault....also found ants covered on a plate that i had put on top of the desser...but other than those issues its a great place and Bill is a great manager\owner as he is always on site.

Would it be fair to say that there are some problems with the place?

Maybe not the panacea that some on this Board write about?
