I will be in SJ above dates, on business but wanting to party. I'll be at the Gran Hotel CR and would appreciate any advice offered. I'm by myself, but would like to meet up with other like-minded individuals for safety and their experience...

Read the excellent posting in the Newbie section for tips (especially safety).

A few quick tips:

1. Take cabs (the red ones are licensed), especially at night. You can get anywhere for 2000 colones or less (about $4)
2. NO WALLET!!! Carry what cash you need in front pocket (several pockets if you have them) and carry a COPY of your passport picture and info page plus page with your entry date
3. Stay north of Avenida 2 on foot especially at night or by yourself (Generally)
4. Most important of all...NO CIEN!!! (No Hundred) and have fun!!!

I guess you know that chicas are not permitted in the GRAN HOTEL. However, the rooms are very nice, great lobby and elegant resturant, very nice outside resturant with great people watching. I personally would love stay there except for the chica rules.

Any happy hour on sat? since, there well be like a billion of us down there?

I read all the postings for Newbie's and learned a lot. I found out after my hotel was booked (in town for business and hotel paid by work) about the no Chica rule, oh well. So I guess I'll head on over to the SL when I get there Sunday afternoon, hope to run into a few of you for some "on the scene advice".

So watch for me everyone, I'm sure I'll be easy to pick out as the Newbie...

I arrive today and am staying at the best western downtown tonight and Aug 30, 31 and Sep 1st at the Clarion Hotel Amon Plaza if anyone needs a wing man or a spanish speaker. I will be at the Cigar Bar, Bar Idem, DR and/or the SL if anyone needs a wing man. I am the short mexican guy with a blu corona hat.

after four cancelled trips I hope to be able to fly out tommorow for my first trip to CR. I ma taking the 10:15 am delta from jfk hoping nothing comes up and I dont have to cancel for the fifth time.

Since I made this trip last minute I dont have a hotel. Considering staying at the del rey. I hope they have rooms available. Based on reading this forum presidente and mozaran are also good choices considering location is important to me as I cant speak spanish and would like to spend most of my time on that block.

Anybody else staying at del rey who would be in town aug 31 - sep 5?

Considering the massive amount of sausage in town @ this time, Gustav churning in the gulf, guys might not be able to get back, You really better scramble and get a room asap, that is if you can find one!!
