housing if you choose to live just 40 minutes outside of SJ you can get screaming rent deals from 100-250 per month.

$220 a month for a 3 bedroom, LR, Kitchen, and 1 full bath....With no traffic, you can be to the HDR in 15 - 20 minutes. $200 for a 2 bedroom in the same complex

Could someone please advise as to the names of these locations 40 minutes away?

Thanks

Brother TioTaco--the best general discussion on this subject is here:
www.costaricaticas.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=22883

I was gonna bump this Thread as "1 of the Best of '08"--it's all that.

I've estimated that my SS Benifits will be about $2300 a month. I have 2 pension plans from 2 companies. Combined they be worth about $3000 per month. I figure I'll also draw $1500 a month from my 401K so that my monthy income should work out to around $6,800 a month. That should be enough to live decently in C.R. right?

Brother BT--Depending on where in your income stream they tax your SS benefits, your SS net income could be (worst case) about $18500 and if your 401(k) was put in pre-tax, that's another $15300 net plus whatever your 2 pensions pay out (were you in a state that taxes pensions?--cuz some do, depending on how they're structured). So gross = $81600//net = +/- $70K. Figuring a 20-year retirement period and not counting SS COLA "bumps", you'll get $35K's worth of value when you kick. Is that about what you had figured? Of course your accountant can (and most probably will) tell you differently but you have to plan for least-worst-case which I've presented. Absolute worst-case is Armaggedon in 2012 as the Jehovah's Witnesses tell me every Saturday.

But to answer your question directly--Yeah, Brother, you'll make out like a fat rat dern near anywhere you go.

BondTrader to put it very simple, if you can not live like a king in CR on that amount of money, you need your head examined. This is CR not the USA. Yes the cost of living here is more than in most Latin countries but it is still no where near that of the states. The monthly figure you quoted is over 15 times the average Tico income. Everyone has a different idea of how they want to live and what "luxuries" they must have. Most guys that I have known spend (waste) thousands the first year here (me included) then realize there is no need. I have heard figures of blowing $25,000-$35,000 above what is needed the first year.

On the figure you quoted, you can do a $100 chica, 2 MP chicas, and eat all your meals out everyday, live in an expensive place in Escazu, and drive a nice car; AND STILL HAVE MONEY LEFT OVER! Hell as I have stated many times, I live in a nice 2 bedroom furnished condo in San Pedro, do a MP chica almost everyday, do a lot of traveling around CR,Nicaland, and Panama, do not have a car, and am having a ball; AND i AM LIVING ON NOTHING BUT MY SS!!!! Yes, I have to watch my money and not do wasteful, unnecessary things; but one can live very nicely and have a ball here on $1500 a month

If you have to have a million dollar totally American type house complete with maid, cook, gardner, etc., eat at the WhiteHouse restrurant every day, drive a BMW, play golf 2-3 times a week, go to the beach and stay in a 5star hotel every weekend, and keep 2-3 Colombianas at your house all the time, NOPE you will not have enough money for very long :!:  8) jeje

BT, I guess that you are doing a bit of leg pulling, right? Like they keep saying, it all depends on your lifestyle.
I guess that my first question would be:

Can you currently live on that amount in the US?

I suppose that if you can't then it wouldn't be sufficient for you to live in CR either! :x

:D :D :D

" A bit of leg-pulling" is one way to put it--" A bit of braggadocio" is another. But, hey, we're all buds here which is why I sorta ran the numbers showing net effective income for the Brother. He might even decide one of those expensivo condos in Medellin is the way to go (see this thread for an explanation): www.costaricaticas.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=26769

If you are having troubles affording SJ, consider AC. The P4P scene is much larger and on $1500/month you can truly live like a King.
