I would like to know if you guys think tourism is down in SJO. I have tried several times to get a room at SL, even booking a few months in advance, and never got one. I just booked a room today for Aug. 10 - 14, though they were full for the weekend. I have been trying ot track international tourism and how it is affected by the high price of gas and would appreciate some input. Happy Hunting!!! Lex

Perhaps the room availability in August reflects the fact there is an anniversary party at the end of August/beginning of September?

In 2007, the Costa Rican economy grew 7.1%, down from the 8.6% in 2006. The Camara Nacional de Turismo de Costa Rica (CANATUR) - the national tourism chamber - said last week that tourism for the first half 2008 was up 12% over the same period last year. CANATUR says that the country can expect almost two million foreign visitors this year.

Just as a foot note. The SL is basically a monger hotel that is almost always totally occupied. It's occupancy rate is not a good indicator of the overall tourism market trend in Costa Rica.

I think mongers are the only ones traveling to San Jose right now. I bet if you tried to book at Balmoral or Holiday Inn they would be nearly empty. Not much eco-tourism during the green season.

I don't know. All the chain hotels (Hampton, Marriott, Best Western etc.) are incredibly expensive especially for this time of year (wet season). And my AA flights last week were booked solid mostly by touristy looking Americans. I did hear "Hawaii" a couple times so think they are forgoing vacations there to cheaper C.R.

I would never fokin pay $144 for a Hampton in the U.S or $120 for a Best Western. Fortunately the local hotels are still decently priced for those of us familiar with the area!
