I kind of like the jock strap and pith helmet idea floated by EC.

While in the comfy zone of SL, drinking coffee and having breakfast, I wear comfies: shorts, flip flops and a t shirt. After that, and before I go out, I like to 'clean up' and wear civilized clothes: long pants, dark polo or short sleeve shirt and dark shoes. Most Ticos assume I am one of them, which is the way I prefer it. In that way, I get less 'looks' when I squire around my young favorita.

However, I have no problem strolling to ZB with my gringo buddies who remain in their comfies throughout the day. I think that if my buddies are polite and respectful, they are, in turn, afforded the same treatment by Ticos.

Surftown, If you will reread BOTH of my posts in this thread, I was not trying to chastise people for what they wear. In the 1st post I was answering the guestion as I see it based on living here and over the past 40 years having spent a lot of time in Latin countries, and also working with Latinos for 30+ years. It had to do with dressing to not draw attention and thus making yourself a target, and with how you (a gringo) will be looked at by the Latinos. In the 2nd post, yes I was ranting about a relatitively small percentage of gringos (should have made that more clear) who go to other countries (not just here) and make obnocious, arrogant asses out of themselves; project the attitude that they are superior and in general perpetuate the "ugly American" idea so many people in other countries have of Americans today.

I can remember when Americans were looked at with appreciation, affection, admiration, and envy. Today, sadly, all too often we are looked at with disgust, distrust, disbelief, and very sadly, with fear and hatred. This change makes me very sad. I am, and always have been very proud to be an American. I just do not like what it has become in the eyes of most of the rest of the world.

OH! And, yes I do know that anything with puma (fake or real) is worn and is very popular here, especially by the young ticas. As for comlpaining to make me feel better about myself, you do not know me and if you did you would know that I feel great about myself. I am loud, obnoxious at times (but not on the streets), egotistical, and highly opinionated. BUT, I am living a dream that most guys in the states can not even imagine.

CIN20-- Wear what ever you wish--hell go naked for all I care!!! I am just trying to explain that, yes, as a Gringo you will look different, BUT that by dressing more conservative (like the natives) you will stand out less, draw less attention, and therefore be less of a target. As for your trendy, designer items, I seriously doubt if you were complimented in a good way on the streets--more likely they were letting you know you were marked as a potential target. Wanting to try on your sunglasses is a very old ploy here to take them and run. As for your "nice shoes"; give me a break!! Not one in 500 ticos on the streets here would know enough english to say that even if they did happen to notice your shoes. Walking the usually very crowded streets here people do not have time to be looking at someones shoes. Oh! and your list of what to wear is a great big invitation to get robbed if you leave the REY/Kl. And the only way it impresses the chicas is by telling them you have money and will be an easy mark. Yes, they will maybe lower their original asking price in hopes of making the bigger score along the way.

As an example of my whole point in all this:
Recently I met a gringo (30ish, tall, athletic) who was always wearing shorts, flipflops, a loud shirt, and a crazy hat. He was continually being loud and obnoxious on the streets--yelling insults across the street at street people, making crude remarks and even groping chicas, and walking into stores, pestering female employes while they were trying to work. I and others told him he needed to tone it down a little (actually a lot). His response--"What the hell for??? I am here to have fun and these are just dumb street people, Ticas, etc" We tried to tell him that if he did not tone it down, he was going to get mugged. WELL guess what??? The next day he was robbed and cut with a knife. You may think this is an extreme case, but, living here, I see it way too freguently. And this is why I am so outspoken and opinionate about the subject.

Lastly, what I have said about dress has nothing to do with what one wears in the REY,KL, NYB, SL, or even ZB. These are Gringo places and the only non gringos are the chicas who, as has been pointed out, could care less what you are wearing;( even thou they do appreciate a nicely dressed guy), and Tico employes of the place. What I was suggesting is how a Gringo should dress and act when in the streets of San Jose in areas such as calle2, 4, 6, 8; Ave 7, 9, 11; or in the Barrios.

I recommend a hawaiian tee shirt, sandals, spandex shorts, sunglasses, gold chains, a cigar hanging out of the mouth, a martini glass in one hand all while very intoxicated and taking a stroll at night with a wad of cash in your pocket. YOu will be suprised how much people will try to interact with you.

Wow this must be one of the most neurotic threads of all time based on one simple newbie question that could be answered in a single sentence. I hope Walter38 is happy now after what he started and wonder if he thinks all CRT members are just plain nuts.

The question has been asked before and gotten the same type of responses so why are you surprised :?:

It is just like the tipping threads, the visa for my Tica novia threads, the should I send money threads as she is different, etc., that appear from time to time.

Bangbang, I promise you, ticos were looking at the shoes giving me compliments. Not every 5 minutes mind you, but at least once per day. This usually occurred while I was outside of the DR, shopping, eating, etc. As for the sunglasses 'ploy', I'm no fool, I know how to play the game. Its not like I gave them my glasses out in the middle of the road where its an easy getaway. I made sure I had the situation covered.

I will say this, all this only happened because I did notice that well, I stand out big time. Being 6'1, 250 , and wearing that stuff, tends to happen. But oh well, like I said earlier, thats what I wear when I'm home, I'm not changing wardrobes for a 3 day trip. But ultimately, to each his own.

Three pages on what to wear! am I going to have to buy all new clothes? Does the Del Rey have a dress code for us? Is there a new gay element revealing itself on CRT? My God are things so boring all we can talk about is clothing. Will someone please start a new thread about falling in love with a hooker and sending her thousands of dollars so you guys will get your minds all for clothing.

And a fair percentage of these are commenting on the commenters. Now we have commenters commenting on the commenters.

What to where and what to do, is about respect. Of course, do and where what you like. However, if you want to be perceived as being respectful of the culture, then try to follow some of the basic guidelines followed above. It is not about self hate, as one member said. You can get by without English, in a flower shirt and shirts, eating at Macdonalds, going only to the DR/BM and never outside of the gultch, but your experience will be greatfuly improved of you learn the culture and step a bit outside of your own.....and yeah, your sessions will be, on the whole will most likley be better....

YMMV...

Here is some Colombia fashion advice from another thread, probably a good idea not to wear my DelRey tacky tourist costume there.
Quote:
Here is some dummies info. Stop wearing short pants and gold necklaces. I was waiting for my girlfriend to come off the metro at the Berrio station. Looking for her i noticed, out of hundredsssssssssss of Colombians
this blond hair gringo wearing shorts (only gringos) walking very confidently with his bling, bling gold chain i could see from 100 feet away. You are going to get robbed!!!!!!!!!! They can get cash for the chain 20 minutes after they rob you. Gringos stop wearing short pants. You stand out too much.

Good talk for a newbee :? :( . The guy who I know who got cut up bad a couple of weeks ago would probably make you look like a midget and thought he was tough. The streets here, just as in any large city are not Mayberry, USA; and all I am trying to say is that the more you stand out because of your dress and actions, the more your will draw attention and the more you are apt to have a problem. Anyone that can not understand and comprend that has an even bigger problem; SO HAVE FUN :!: :!:

As for growing some balls; It is not a matter of having "balls" my friend, it is a matter of having some common sense and concern for others. I live here, know the culture and customes, know the danger on the streets, and I go places alone that most gringos would never go even in a group. I do not look Latino, but I dress to blend in, act like I belong, and speek the language. Ticos on 6th and 8th, ticos in 15 de Setiembre, Colombianos around the Coka Cola bus stop, Dominicos in their area, do not pay me any attention. I walk throu the parks at night and the trannys ignore me! CAN THE GRINGO IN SHORTS, FLIPFOLPS, AND WILD SHIRT SAY THAT?? And who is more likely to be mugged?? I personally do not care how anyone dresses. I have tried to explain the reasons for doing and NOT doing certian things, and if you choise to do different, it is no sweet off my balls. But do not come back with a post about how dangerous Costa Rica is after getting mugged.

I have said all I am going to on this subject. Everyone do what you want to!!!
