If you make a right out of Hotel Presidente and go down the pedestrian street a ways, there is sort of a mall type entry on the left. Go in there and on the right you will see a vestibule with about 6 ATM's inside. You have to use your card to get in. Any of the machines in here will give either dollars or colones (unless they are out of either). I usually get colones, but to each his own. Anyway, these machines seem to have no transaction limit, only limited by your bank limit.

I have a mastercard check/debit card from a small "ghetto" bank, and never had a problem with it anywhere.

Those ATM's located in Plaza Avenida are BAC San Jose bank red total machines which are also used by Scotia bank. There transaction limit is $400.00.

Ahhhhh... I only ever get out about 3-4 hundred at a time, and in all honesty, whe it gets close to the end of my trip, I do get dollars so I don't have much colones to exchange before heading back.
