Very true, jadjuco. Central America tends to reward education more, so it is definately the best place to be learning and practicing your espanol.I pick up bad habits from translating so much for Mexicans from the rancheros. Complete lack of use of the having verbs such as tiener, tienes, etc. as well as a ton of slang.I always feel better about my espanol when returning from CR. Then back to the pidgin espanol of my customers. Every effort counts and all who are learning espanol will be greatly rewarded. There is nothing latinas like more than to share thier culture and language. And the language is the culture in the spanish speaking world. Just don't be a chilango(stuck up) and keep it simple.

Thought this might be useful to others who have difficulty with Spanish. It has worked great and has been used in the Del Rey, Zona Blue, G G ******* and other places. Depending on my mood, I may use all the questions or just some. I keep copies in my pocket at all times. This will certainly cut down on the "communication card" that gets used a lot where the girl will say she will do one thing and then back out in the room with the excuse that she didn't understand what you were saying.

Sr LV, with admiration and respect to you for your self taught translation skills. Most Americans have enough trouble with just English, which is the most difficult language in the world.

There is a world of difference from Mexican & Tex Mex Spanish to Central American Spanish. Hell, Nicaraugua and Costa Rica Spanish are different. In the Caribe, the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rica are close but still apart. Cuban Spanish is a whole nother opportunity. Let's not forget Miami Spanish and the Spanglish from NY, NY.

Funny…Elroy, that you mention that, because the first thing I do when I get to my hotel is grab a bunch of their business cards. Then as I meet girls or I want them to call me later, I give them the hotel card with my name and room number. Maybe not the same thing but close. :D :D :D

No promotional advertisement but working on it
:D :D :D

Actually Mandarin and its dirivitive, Cantonese, are the hardest to learn.I speak a fair amount of Mandarin, can write a little as well. But Cantonese has such sharp tones and is not fun to speak, imho, so I never learned it.The distance between Cantonese and Mandarin is really about the same distance as British English and American English.Just as in the Spanish example you gave, it is quite possible to learn the basic spanish skills and people from every area you mentioned above will understand you. Then fill in the blanks with the local slang of your favorite espanol speaking country.I took classes in CR and Mexico. They can be a fun way to spend a few hours, if you are so inclined during your visit. Shirley at Sportsmans is a natural teacher, you could ask her to help with pronunciation and what not. Have fun.

I consider myself tobe 90% fluent in Spanish, but I will also admit to having a tough time understanding Puerto Ricans and Cubans. Cutting the end off words, too much speed and slang make it another ball game.

We (PR's) do tend to drop off the (s) at the end of words. Speed and slang is what differentiates the cultures of Spanish.

It is an old joke that if you speak slower and louder people will understand the language you are speaking. However, it holds some truth if the person you are speaking to is a non-native speaker.Teaching ESL my staff would usually speak English at our normal pace if we did not want the students to understand our conversation, and a much slower pace if we did not care if the advanced students listened in.According to a few doctor friends of mine, the brain is capable of learning alot of languages.More than most people have time to learn. But after the language you were born speaking, the brain processes these new languages a bit slower. So speaking slower gives the person you are speaking to a few extra seconds to process the info. and give an intelligent response.

Cuantas leches me dejas tirar? – How many shots can you let me shoot?

But if you would like to use some PR slang, surprised them and get them off their game, use:

Cuántos palos te puedo dar? – How many hits can I hit you with?

:P :P :P :P :P :P
