This may seem like a silly question, but one of my chica friends has a battered old cellphone that has been dropped hundreds of times and on which I can hardly hear her talk, even in a quiet place.

If I bring her a late-model, multi-band phone from the U.S., one that works on the GSM frequencies, is there any reason she can't put her ICE SIM card out of her old phone into the new one?

I know the frequencies and bands have to be compatible, but I just wondered if there is anything unique about ICE sim cards that would make it not work.

It must be unlocked.

Is she asking you for the phone? I do not know but it sounds to me like a RFM. One of my favoritas asks me for a phone, my reply, “Work for it”.

I hate to be so involved with a chica that I have to deal with her phone problems too.

-GSM technology
-1800Mhz frequency

You do realize that an unlocked phone can be had for all of $40 right? He also said that he hates it, she didn't ask for it.

Phones are expensive in CR because there isn't a company locking you into a contract to subsidize the cost of the phone. I have known others to bring phones down for Ticos/Ticas and be repaid since the cost difference for a phone in CR vs the US is huge.

No, she didn't ask for it. But I'm tired of her phone not working half the time. I was there for two weeks in May and about 50 percent of her calls just dropped in mid call, even if she was sitting in one place the whole time.
I tried to use it several times and would've thrown it out a taxi window if she would have let me.
But I can get a cheap phone up here and get it unlocked and take it down there when I go back in a couple months.

A new phone might not solve the problem. Cell reception in Costa Rica can be spotty. There are areas that GSM works well but TDMA does not and there are other areas that the opposite is true. In general TDMA covers more areas of the country than GSM.

However, they say TDMA will be shut off next year.. i doubt that will happen, but who knows.. there's always a first time things happen when they say they will...

It's true, GSM is spotty.. like less than 200 meters from a cell tower, and you can see my bars go up and down sometimes..
