Over the next few weeks, those body scanning devices are to be installed in 38 airport locations. The Whole Body Imager is currently in use among random passengers in Albuquerque, Baltimore, Denver, Los Angeles, New York's JFK and Washington Reagan National. Later this month machines will be installed in Dallas, Detroit, Las Vegas and Miami.
These scanners that bounce millimeter waves while a passengers stands in a 9-ft. tall glass portal could replace metal detectors at security checkpoints. TSA agents view the images from a nearby closed room. The images are said to be so detailed that a person's gender is shown and even sweat can show up on images. Faces on images are blurred for privacy and agents delete images once viewed.
Scanners cannot see through plastic or rubber materials. The entire process to produce an image takes about 30 seconds. Passengers declining to go through a scanner will face a personal TSA pat-down. Care to see a sample image? Click here.
