I knew a guy that struggled with booze and drugs years ago, he kicked those habits and disappeared for a few years then when I saw him again he had put on 150 lbs. Needless to say I was shocked and assumed he had switched his addictions to food. Sadly he struggled with losing and gaining back 40-50 lbs. over the next few years but eventually died last year from circulation problems and kidney failure and I would guess last I saw him he was close to 400 lbs.

I read somewhere the top 7 different things we can get addicted to: Drugs, alcohol, gambling, sex, porn, relationships, and food. Any of these can cause a man's downfall in one way or another, usually financial or physical ruin. I won't pretend to understand the struggle with weight since it's one thing I've never dealt with but have overcome a couple of the other big ones so I do know what a challenge it is to change your entire lifestyle, habits and way of thinking. Like a wise man once said- anything worth having in life does not usually come easy. Despite the causes of the problem whoever mentioned tough love and the guys that have posted their success stories here are on the right track IMO. You never know who you might inspire by simply telling your story and what you've accomplished. There are some harsh comments in this thread but underneath I think there are also some guys concerned about friends and would rather they be with us a long time, unlike the guy that I used to know..

Some of us have an addictive personality and coupled with an A personality, it can be double trouble...

Let's not forget smoking as one of the most dangerous addictions... I struggled for years with cigarettes and finally exchanged that nicotine habit for an exercise habit... I traded one addiction for another...

I eventually broke the smoke habit and started running over 50 miles a week... My weight went from 185 to under 155... I went overboard, of course, but I never felt so good as I became a competitive runner... After 5 years of road racing including marathons, a car accident derailed that phase so I went full bore into tennis... One addicction for another... But these are healthy addictions...

Now after a few years of a relaxed lifestyle, it's time to get the weight off again...

However, I still haven't shaken the poosie addiction and I'm not sure I want to change that part of my life... I think we all share this addiction, just keep it in proper perpective with the other important aspects of your life... 8) 8) 8)
