I said it was "the best thing that could happen" and that is exactly correct. If the humiliation leads them to a longer more satisfying life because they dropped the weight and didn't die of heart disease then that is the "best thing", right? Even if their feeling were hurt.

However, just because it may lead to the best result does not mean that I condone it.

In a nutshell, yes, there are medical conditions that make losing weight difficult for a very small percentage of people.

Thirdworld said the percentage was less than 1% but could not provide any reference to support that figure. What % do you use and what evidence do you have that supports that number?

If it is your contention that the percentage is higher than single digits then I will allow you to provide that data. I am talking about the majority and the condition that is keeping them from losing weight is their inability to get the fork out of their mouths.

Lo siento to those complaining of thread hijack. Sorry if we got into territory that might influence someone to improve their life. We now return you to thread frivolity...

haha... Always needs a reference... Kind of like the time I was called out for suggesting that there were terrorists in CR without providing a reference.. I think now we know that was valid if we read any newspapers on CR. Not writing a term paper and have better things to do than provide references.

How magnanimous  you will allow me to provide data. Sorry in my experience it has always been the responsibility of those who quote a number to provide the empirical evidence to support their claim when challenged. Most times people who quote a percentage have just pulled it out of their ... and can provide no actual data. Sounds like you did that but in the spirit of brotherhood I will allow you the opportunity to publish the data that supports your statement.

Yeah, whatever!! haha Maybe you should get laid, might lighten you up some. And my previous statement seemed to be verified. Why don't you refute me with a real stat on the % of people, oh scholarly one....

Unless of course they have enough ethics to admit the number was a wag.

Sorry, but I have enough sense to know that the majority of obese people overeat and that is the "condition" that keeps them portly. I don't need a scientific analysis of their stools samples...

Pac55, I wasn't really commenting so much on life improvement, or complaining about life improvements or threadjacking, as opposed to saying that something meant in the spirit of humour had devolved into a serious and somewhat antagonistic thread about something not directly related to the topic at hand (which is seat costs, as opposed to lifestyle choices of the fat)

I would have said the same thing about people saying quit drinking, quit smoking, wear rubbers during sex, whatever. No offense meant to you or the others who are just as self indulgent within the thread as I tend to be when starting them. Whimsy takes us all over the place and I'm the last one to complain about that, given my tendencies. I just like to see silly stuff stay silly, and serious stuff stay serious. I also know that I'm just one voice in a community, and it's a public thread, so hey, I'll shut up. Everybody knock themselves out. :D

Whatever you believe and say amigo is okay with me. I learned many many many years ago that trying to have a rational discussion with someone who has a closed mind is not only futile but foolish so I will not waste either my time or the boards on answering anymore of your posts on this subject.

Via con Dios.

On to more important matters the Miami Hurricanes are on there way to Omaha to participate, for the 23rd time, in the college world series.

GO CANES!

I have to diagree with you Pac.

There are a variety of reasons people are overweight. Yes, some (maybe even a good percentage) overeat. But many others simply eat poorly. Two people can eat the same volume of food and come away with vastly different caloric values. Hell a meal at McDonalds, even if you only eat until satisfied, could run 2000+ calories for that single meal alone.

Some people eat nothing but junk food, and their food volume is less than others who eat healthier food.

I know people who eat 3x what others do, and don't gain a pound, even eating junk. What exactly is "over eating"?

How your body metabolizes food is genetically dictated.

If it was simply a matter of eating less, don't you think more people would figure that out?

 brilliant.
i just want to address my comment. yes i used the word humiliation but in truth it is a subtle one. its not like people are going to be publicly flogged but make no mistake. if you are obese everyone notices. and why is it acceptable for you to be that size with no repercussions?

i know three very large people who are close to me. one is my stepdaughter and i love her dearly and have tried everything possible to encourage her. including purchasing gym memberships near her school, having an eliptical in my home and not bringing garbage in to my home to eat.

another is my office manager, who i care for deeply, have encouraged and provided an eliptical in my office and offered memberships etc. when she has spoke of getting fit.

the other is my nephew who is over 400 and really a lost cause in mind and body.

the one thing all have in common is that they EAT LARGE QUANTITIES OF GARBAGE ON A DAILY BASIS. that and they choose not to exercise because they are uncomfortable and it is easier to have a food party and forget about it.
people who just want to make excuses for these people astound me. in the same way a drunk must be addressed as such and shown tough love so should an obese person. i'm irish so does that mean my genetics have predisposed me to being a drunk so i should be tolerated in public drunkeness? of course not.
if i borrowed too much money from my house and spent it on putas should the rest of the taxpayers help me pay it back even though they lived within their means? congress thinks so.

but that would require people to have personal responsibility and who believes in that anymore? easier to make excuses.

I've been big all my life, i would rather be in a room with other big people every minute of every day than to be with another obnoxious drunk for 5 minutes. no one knows exactly why we overeat but in most people i think that it is a combination of pysch problems and advertising. my family is all big and they have that farmer and work ethic so they would eat a lot and than work off the calories on the farm, unfortunately my generation doesn't have a farm to do the work.. whatever, i think that people that have a fixation on fixing people are a pain. so thank you for standing up and saying that yes a person has a right to embarass someone.

PAC 55 seems kind of harsh, like the GD First Sergeant or that SOB squad corporal.

Yes, We should all try to get in shape. Many are dealing with some challenges. Self -discipline, scheduling meals, and exercise are key. Allbeit, not always so easy.

Thankfully we have one big guy on the board throwing props out to "How are my balls during and after my & young grasshopper wing man's summer vacation trip to SJO report" thread

And another brother of the board giving us "RPM lessons & tweeking a sex machine on steroids in Stern like takes"... Cousin Richey, where are you?

Makes one want to Say What???

Let's just all bump fists and get on with it
