So far in 2 days I've been screwed out of my change 3 times at the Del Rey, twice by waitresses and once by a waiter when I had a sandwich. Is this the new SOP at the HDR? If you pay within 1500 colones I guess they just keep it. They were always slow but now they just don't even bother, not that it's going to break me but it's the principle since I'd rather tip them voluntarily then have them steal it.

Sounds like one of those "Muy Tico" things. If you don't ask directly for your change back they conveniently forget about it and keep it for themselves. After all you are a "rich Gringo".

Having the correct change is always a good idea.Just go to the casino cage and get a lot of 1000 colone notes and some change. It's no doubt that they sometimes conveniently forget, but more often I think it is their stupid system of having more that one person handling your money. Your waitress gives the bill and your money to another waitress...then she hopefully gives it back to your server who brings it to you....SOMETIMES.

At least in the U.S., upon giving your money to the waitress or waiter to pay your bill, they say "...Need change?" :?

That's about as bad as those damned "tip jars" that have sprung up EVERYWHERE.

Paquito Loquito...

I'm not sure if it's new S.O.P. I have never had problems (aside from a long wait) getting my change at HDR.

Tip jars: When I was in Cancun at a bar called Senor Frog's, there was a fancy tip jar on the bar with a little sign: "Your tip buys milk for our Babi*s." It could be worse in CR.

I noticed that on one of my very 1st trips to C.R. and on 2 occasions in the same night they "forgot" to bring me my change so from that point on I always carry plenty of 1K bills and change to cover my drinking needs so that they don't need to bring me any change.

Hey Paco, maybe that is why I NEVER got my coffee; she was afraid if she came back to the table, or even looked our way, you might ask her for your change

New Guy:

If you had done your homework and read everything on CRT you would know not to use large bills when paying a bill at the Del Rey. I'm sure PokLoco will quickly give you a link to several discussions on the subject. I'm sorry you are PokLoco  you'd think you'd know better. 8)

Just returned from a 1 week trip and had no problems with change. In fact the waitresses were more effiecient in returning my change timely than I can remember on any other previous trips. By the way, I never tip due to the fact that I am a cheap bastard, but this had no effect on the service. 8)

Paco, maybe they just don't like you. I recommend you try another bar or another country to pollute.

Thanks for the support and smart ass comments  , guess I just look like an easy-mark loser so they just keep my money.
Yes Berk I thought of that but guess I'm just stupid assuming they would bring back my change besides I was in mid negotiations with a chica when the waiter took my 5k note and said "tank you", after he walked away I realized he was never coming back. Come to think of it I bought her a cappucino before eating and the waitress never returned my change from the lobby bar either so it's actually 4 times I've been ripped off.
I now just get up and order from the bar, you get your change back right away.

Paco,
I hear ya.

When I hit town last week all I had was 10,000 bills from the ATM. I walked up to the side of the main bar in the Blue Marlin and ordered a Bavarian Light. Of course the change would be more than the cost of the beer.

I stood there patiently waiting for my change. The bartenders were hustling here and there and all 3 even disappeared for awhile to the other end of the bar but no one was bringing me my change.

I had an entire conversation with one cutie sitting there as I patiently waited for someone to return with my change.

After what seemed like almost 10 minutes I finally saw the bartender that I had paid give my change to another girl and told her to take it to me.

I'm sure they would not have minded if I had simply walked away but since it was my first beer of the night there was little chance of that.

In defense of that cute blond with glasses (and displaying a very healthy rack) who waitresses at the coffee bar, she always brought our change back quickly (mas o menos).

The little one (Gabby?) had the hots for Latinoheat. Go figure.

See, Paco, you are smarter than you look!

Yes, they will use the fact that you are distracted against you.

Come to think of it I bought her a cappucino before eating and the waitress never returned my change from the lobby bar either so it's actually 4 times I've been ripped off.

You have established a track record as a soft touch. They prey on the newbies and the weak and the PacoLoco!

I now just get up and order from the bar, you get your change back right away.

Always a winner! Another trick is to have the chica go to the bar, order the drinks and pay (with our money, of course) and bring the drinks and change back. The chicas seem to get better service and are not afraid to get the barmaids "attention", shall we say!

Man...what a tight WADD  ! Lookout Paco as first it starts out where you won't share your money then pretty soon you will only share your load with just one chica :) be careful :D ?
