Scottp1063 are you going to buy a chica a house? (You wouldn't be the first.)

I was wondering if it is realistic for a girl to buy a place.

Not usually but it depends on the chica, most live day to day and spend what they earn pretty quickly with no thought about the future. But there are those few rare chicas that have some smarts and actually save money to buy a house, have met a few that claimed to be doing so, and have already saved up and bought cars.

Scott, don't forget that when houses in CR are purchased, it is usually with cold cash. 30K, 40K is one hell of a lot of guys when considering they can't save everything they make.

one of my favoritas wants me to buy her a "house" in Desamparados for $5K.

I wouldn't live there, but she seemed to like the area.

of course, from where she came from, Nicaragua, Desamparados looks like the land of milk and honey.

the trouble with helping the little darlings is that the requests for assistance never, never end.

another little darling favorita had her K*ds sleeping on mats on the floor, so, I bought some beds for them.

was she grateful? yes, for about 30 seconds. Then she asked for a cell phone and a new blouse and some money for her sick mother and so on.

it never ends.

better men than I, and with far more resources, have been no match for the demands of the little darlings.

No... I am not planning on buying any chicas a house. I'm in the real estate field and was wondering. Knowledge is power, so I try to learn all I can. I am happy having my favorites for a couple days and then moving on to the next.

This is classic! They just keep thinking, what else can I get? I'll not stop asking until he says no a hundred times. After no a hundred times... on to the next stupid, weak, pathetic gringo without a life of his own. After we do crap for them, I truly don't think they see us as nice guys, but instead weak, low-life, chumps.

If you want to give.... give to the chicas who are too ugly to be hookers. She'll like appreciate your gift a lot more.

That uses the same "technology" as the electric "suicide showers" presently being used in CR.

I brought this back primarily for Zebra's description of typical chica housing. D2864 had an apt comment as well.
On my April '08 trip a chica I was with said she lived in Desamparados but was quick to add "San Miguel"--I guess this is an upper-scale in the town?
To Zebra--I tried to PM you a kudos and couldn't get through--mailbox full?

No more callers, we have a winner!

The bigger the purchase, the more respect she loses for the monger.

They see anything larger than a trinket as a sign of weakness and stupidity. If she didn't earn it then you must be really weak to just give it to her is her way of thinking. With each request we fulfill her respect drops until she has none for us at all. Then she is on to the next sucker.

"No" is a perfectly good answer. She will respect you for having the courage to deny her a bite on her fishing expedition. If it is something that she needs as well as wants, like beds for the little ones, then show her a way that she can earn it. That way you both have worth and she will respect you more. Just my opinion....

Guys this is exactly why entitlement programs in the Good old USA are such a disaster!! It makes people dependent without any sense of self worth. It turns people into miserable whiners....In the end people only respect what they can't control...

Great insight, Zip. I completely agree.

Funny thing too is that in Maryland (where I grew up), the gov't gives "poor" people an "independence" card to purchase food. They had the nerve to label it "independence." Just unbelievable BS!

I call it the dependence card.

My first two years in CR I lived in three different places in Heredia...

Place 1: apartment: 2 bdr, 1 ba, 650sqft or so, 110k/mo
Place 2: house: 3 bdr + den, 2 ba, 1100 sqft, 160k/mo
Place 3: house: 2 bdr, 1ba, 700 sqft, 130k/mo

Then I bought a nice gringo-style place in a gated community with a pool ;)

Obviously the rentals were all very tico, but they weren't dirty or run down by any means... The 2nd place had hot water, the first and third had suicide showers. I found all of them in either La Nacion or the Tico Times. Just pointing out that as a tica with a roommate it's quite easy to keep your renting cost under $150/mo and be in a decent place.

It is so Ironic what something is “called” & what it truly “is” at least depending on what the meaning of “is” is??? So many poor that I see in the USA are truly victims of themselves. They don’t want anybody telling them what to do or telling them to be responsible. So they can’t hold a job with their BS attitude so then they are looking for ways to be “disabled”.

Now they achieve their end goal & don’t have to put up with the BS of holding down a job which they hated. So they get their so called “ independence” card . They just keep going down this self esteem losing path all the time thinking they are winning??? In the end these are control cards like you vote for me & I will control you with the bare minimum existence. Man… who could ever be happy in that type of mindless circle but more lazy stupid people signup every day.

Back on subject here many Ticas I got to know lived in some decent homes with some room mates. These I would think must have rented for $400 or more. So many of the Colombianas I met lived in real dives of an apartment. Bare minimum existance with one or more Colombianas. Hell they really didn't want much but to bag as much $$$$ as they could & go back home.
