I have never flown on Spirit and am aware of their less than stellar customer service. Since they don't serve SFO its never concerned me that much. However with the recent fare increases, I figure I can catch a commuter flight to LAX if I can get a good price to SJO.

Spirit sends me these emails every week about their $9 fares but you have to be a member of their $9 Fare Club to see what is available.

Has anyone joined their club, and is it worth doing? Or just a scam?

I don't find it worthwhile. YMMV. I fly Spirit extinsively thru Latin America (Nicaruaga, Guatemla, Peru, CR, Mexico, Panama). When on leisure I get great deals but I fly odd days. If u are flexible Spirit is great. But tonite I looked to go tomorrow thru Monday to SJO. Spirit: $602. Copa out of MIA ($202). For good deals on Spirit u don't need to join fare club, but get their emails. I feel I am qualified in this arena, although Phoenix Rising has even more experience with them. But he is probably busy, as he is currently in MDE.

use there cc once a month and $9 fare club is free first year membership for cc is $39 but during their cc promo they give you a $39 credit on your first flight, so it is like free for first year and then you can decide if you like it or not. i used it and got first class ticket for about $100 rt above normal flight cost. never flew 1st so had to try it...
