Phoenix- went down to Miami this afternoon and there was a lot of backup both ways around 135th Street. They were doing some work in both directions but there was no shortage of autos.

If not for not wanting my car to be potentially searched I would have made inquiry as to what I may have seen on Calle Ocho at Red Road, an Eli Manning toss from the Bottoms Up club. If somebody doesn't have an operation within those love motels, somebody should.

 Please let me know where I can buy gas in CR for $4.00 a gallon. Last time I filled up it was $4.55. Now that the colon has been devalued it is less but a price increase is scheduled for Saturday and a request for another one was submitted on Friday

It is still less than 4 dollars here in California (I think the most expensive place for gasoline in the US). I'm talking regular gas. I saw a sign last night 3.89.

So glad I work from home......

Ok guys I think these articles say a lot. T. Boone Pickens seems like a good old genuine self made billionaire too me 8) . This is just another great American story of rags to riches that is possible in a great country like ours. I love to see people do well like this because it means that so can you if we would have been as clever or smart.

Better yet this is a Playboy interview so it sort of fits into this old monger site :) :D !! http://www.boonepickens.com/pdf/article7.pdf

This is about his life: http://www.boonepickens.com/media/default.asp

It seems to me he is a straight shooter. He sees us now at "peaking oil" it looks like too me. The price at the pump now backs it up also one would think?

I believe LittleKings post is spot on!!! I hear guys bitching about the price but really I am ok with it. The higher it goes the more I make in the markets which far off sets what I spend on travel & fuel  . You guys should really read these articles & get on board when the price dips. It is a finite resource PERIOD & we are consuming 85,000,000 barrels a day. It ain't going to last forever & a few oil shocks from shortages should really get things reeling  ! It took eons for this planet to produce what we will burn thru in just a few short centuries :( .

The US may control many things like mongering but Oil Prices forget it!!! There maybe even resource wars to get their fair share. Wonder why there is so much strife in all these oil rich countries??? I don't think that is an accident  ! All this BS about alternative energies like they are going to pull some rabbit out of the hat    It may power your lights at home but try picking up a hot street walking chick with that strapped on solar panel on the roof of your Yugo :D . Wait til the battery powered car tries to drive across the desert. Turn on the AC or wipers then watch as you drop 20 miles an hour :? :) .

Alternatives will help but will fall short of direct replacement. It took many decades to build the infrastructure around oil. Imagine how much it will take to replace it?

Try to fly a big heavy jet on ethanol or strap some BIG batteries on it & see what happens  . You just can't get enough BTUs of energy out of a small package like the cheaper fossil fuels supply. The days of cheap transportation are coming to an end. A $125 per barrel maybe real cheap???? Pickens believes oil will last to about the year 2100. His whole life has been around oil so my guess is he has some pretty good insight.

Hydrogen sounds good but it takes more energy to produce it than you get out of it. Warren Buffet invested in all those Railway companies because he sees we will be going back to this at some point I guess? This makes more sense in the nearer term one would think.

The world seems to be in a catch 22 with all this. It is hard to conserve a cheap source of energy in some ways because if you don't use it to grow & produce something another country will use it for their growth leaving you behind. The Chinese are sure courting oil rich nations & soaking up so much raw material. That looks smart too me for their growth because it will just be more difficult to do this once we start running out of cheap very mobil type of energy like the fossil fuels. Also I wonder how other Nations will be about sell oil once they see they will need it more than the money it brings in. It will be real interesting to see what the true value of oil really is once "REAL" shortages show up? Still plenty of oil for now but for how long?

One other rather ominous note for example all the oil in Iraq. If that is left to fall into unfriendly hands all that energy would possibly be used against us?

Mongers can't live on Vitamin C,L & V (Cialis, Levitra & Viagra) alone. We need real energy to fulfill or destiny :D !

The only country on the planet which really paid attention to the 1970 oil shocks was Brazil. They are the only country that is totally independent at the moment it seems. Lets all move to Brazil where many things come together for not only fun but also energy :D .

That's great for you, but what are you going to do when you may not be able to travel to where you want to go because they are having food riots and revolutions because of the high price of food bought on by the....high price of oil.

Or when after all the mergers and there is only 3 airlines and they're charging $2,300 r/t to CR or wherever. When alot of gringos can no longer afford the flight or the trip because they're laid off or their business is dead, the Colombianas we love so much will have little business and will head home to their respective towns, if you think you can go there and still get them have fun with the war that will be going on which Bush and assoc. are just now starting to forment: http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080511/ap_ ... and_rebels

Hate to be gloom and doom but I don't see it going another way unless we get some more intelligent policies going and get the speculators and special interest away from our vital energy. The fabric of society is a delicate balance, and a bunch of greedy groups, orginizations and individuals are going to send all of us to hell in a handbasket if they're not stopped.

Jsmythe I hope you are wrong but fear you are right. We are seeing a pretty significant decrease in ocean bio-mass in the PNW (not "scientifically" significant, just my opinion). There are a lot of opinions as to why but increased fishing pressure from non-US and US/Canada fleets may be depleting the food source for many of the larger fish. A krill fishery was begun in 2000 (and ended in 2006 due to suspected impacts). Herring and anchovies are being caught at an alarming rate. Much of this is being used to feed farm fish in Canada and the far east. Consequently, salmon returns are at historic lows despite huge investments in habitat enhancement and a host of other efforts.

A shift from corn and other grains for bio-fuel to cellulose based plants will free up the grain eventually but will that shift happen in time to avoid a famine? Some of the poorest nations rely on surplus grain and donated stocks or low market prices to feed their poorest. They are already feeling the pinch.

There may be bright spots to higher fuel prices: A Momma/Papa neighborhood general store may be viable for much of the west where the public is more spread out. A little higher in-store cost may be acceptable if it saves "a trip into town". Mass transit for commutes would probably benefit. New niches will open up.

I am hoping Costa Rica will be a good place to weather it out. The country could easily produce a lot of food if necessary and, as long as the civil infrastructure holds up, we may fair all right even in fairly sparse times.

Jsmythe23,

Like I posted move to Brazil :) ! They don't have to fight over oil because they have prepared better than the rest of the world. The world is changing be prepared to change with it. Don't get caught in a big city when the sit goes down. I can only control & use my one vote wisely but being able to control where I live & what I own is my best bet for my future I believe. I don't want BIG Govt to take care of me since they have made such a HUGE mess out of what they control as they turn everyone into the lowest common denominator.

Don't lose your ability to have some land & provide your own food away from others. I also have women that I enjoy where I live so the others are simply icing on the cake. I would miss some of the Latinas if costs become prohibitive but lucky for me I have plenty of dreams to fall back on :D .

Sometimes people think they can not afford to change but can you afford not to if one sees dark clouds forming that you have little effect on. The world goes where it is headed from what I have seen & unfortunately takes many with it that don't plan :? ....

The environmentalists are helping to run up the cost at the moment since they are affecting the supply side by not letting them drill off the coast of Florida or expanding in Alaska. Way to go guys  ... that should help create some more near term oil shocks. Once these shocks start to occur you can't just run out & grab that oil as needed since it takes years to put it all online :( . All I can do is adjust my investments around the cards I am given to play with. If you have a better idea let me know?

I really don’t believe in all the doomsday or conspiracy theories but I do plan for the worst at times just incase. 99% of the time the stuff man worries about never happens & the 1% that does one could hardly ever have seen coming so too much worry is not worth the effort. One thing it looks like for sure though is we will at some point run out of cheap oil. This will change the world in many ways. Let’s hope that someone can pull a rabbit out of the hat with the ability to make cheap bio-fossil fuel in mass. Looks like a daunting task at the moment unfortunately?

Hey Zippy,

Thanks for the reply, I'm already out of the US and have contigency plans all set. I'm an optimist by nature, but with this current administration in charge I'm a big-time doomsdayer and consiracy theorist. Like I said, like you I'm prepared for the worst if it should come. Just a shame though, hundreds of millions will have to suffer because a few thousands aren't happy with making tens of millions and want hundreds of millions and billions instead. Human nature I guess, but I hope something happens to stop them. Barring the masses in the US getting themselves un-distracted by American Idol and Brittany Spears and boycotting the media until they can get real news and not the corporate/right wing propoganda we'll be on the same trip over the rapids and will be bringing a good part of the world with us. Either by our unprovoked wars or by us so weakening the world economy. If as you say we are at peak oil and Brazil has the resources for fuel, you can bet we will be involved in some unprovoked attack or destabilization with them as well unless we are too weak to do it.

As for my first post, it was because I thought you were just being selfish and we're unaware of the effect on everyone, I now see you are very aware and good for you, you are smart to try to profit from it.

I'm not a conspiracy theorist, but I can see some trends:

1. Big oil profits are and have been at record high levels for the last two years. None of these profits are being doled back to the consumer as price breaks. Friends of mine who truck for a living are going broke faster than a newbie monger with a pocketful of colones and a never-ending erection in the del Rey. No joke here.

2. Ethanol, wasteful in every aspect from process to pump is not a salvation for our fuel crisis, and even the farmers growing the corn aren't getting rich from it... but big petroleum corporations are reaping immense profits.

3. I believe the fuel restrictions might be one way that a despotic world government can and will control the movement of people from one place to another. I have always said that I have felt the leash being tightened, and whether by circumstance, coincidence or colusion, the leash is indeed shorter for many of us.

4. I also believe that the fuel crisis is largely artificially created/supported. We could and should have come up with alternative energy sources years ago...certainly the "think tank" boys saw it coming and advised, but were largely ignored. I just heard a story on NPR about a couple college K*ds who retrofitted a Preus with additional batteries...and are now getting 100 mph. :D So the technology is there or could soon be...but the government continues to get its pound of flesh as homebrew fuels (including recycled McDonald's fryer grease) are taxed at the same rate as petroleum distillates.

I fear that each trip to C.R. will be my last, as fuel prices soar, the BICE starts getting more aggressive in searching free citizens at the borders, the focus of global media scrutiny lumps mongers in with ch*ld molesters.... etc. etc.

I'm already as green as I can be. I don't burn but one light at night, keep my thermostat at 58 degrees even on the coldest winter nights, don't run the A.C. on the hottest days... and it still isn't enough to ease the pain.

So.... I'm stocking up on beans, bullets and bandages, trying to get a water storage system in place, shopping for a multifuel heater in case they cut off the natural gas (as was done several times in the former Soviet Union) etc. etc. I never saw myself as the "survivalist cabin" type...hell, I don't even live in Idaho or Montana... but I'm starting to change my mind. :(

This used to really chap my hide but I now think that the artificial crisis is probably a good thing. We are now focused on resolving the problem as never before. We were going to have to face it someday, why wait until we are forced to by depletion?

Back to the alternative energy rabbit out of the hat thinking.....the free market would have already brought this out if it was available I believe..Everyone knows they would be Zillionaires to bring it out so I just don't think it is there or will be when we run out of oil. The mother of all invention is necessity.

If people are looking for the Govt to solve the problem just remember they are the ones which I totally agree with El Ciego that are putting this shorter & shorter leash on us. What every happened to REAL free enterprise & the anti-monopolization, anti-trust laws. I thought these laws were supposed to keep us from being steam rolled by big Corps????

This administration few are pleased with including myself (sold us out to the Big Corps IMHO  ) but rather left or right or right or left they are all about power, lies, manipulations & CONTROL, don’t K*D yourself. Too far either way & we lose moderation, sensibility & balance which I feel are the keys to a great future.

Sometimes I daydream & it is not all about hot Latinas that want to play with little Zip. I sometimes think maybe man is better off without all this “POWER” & “ENERGY”. Maybe if we didn’t have all that Power Peter-meter shit to drive around & try to impress each other we could become more self sufficient. Maybe our "VALUES" would become real  ??? Maybe we would have to actually look at each other for who we really are & be nice & greet each other realizing we are just lucky to have ever lived. Turning off American Idol & the boob tube the women might even get bored enough to play with us????

Modern conveniences create modern problems. Maybe the Amish are ahead of their time & not so backwards as many think? Yeah I know it is just a dream & you can’t put the Jeanie back in her bottle….

Jsmythe23 I am happy you see I see many things the same as you. You are right also I believe in that it is a shame that millions have to suffer. Just remember though like you point out about American Idol. People suffer their own fate from their own stupidity & laziness & then want to blame others for their own ineptness. So I don’t feel that sorry for those that never try.

Funny how humans work & don’t like to think much. They just see & react never getting below the surface of much of anything. Just think if the plug is pulled on your hot looking woman neighbor’s nice new car & her new flat panel she watches American Idol on, this is the same gal that thought you where a geek for having your garden & your solar panels on your roof. Hum….. now her fantasy world has less value than you. May make a difference someday. Most people have really allowed themselves to be dumbed down by the entitlement mentality. Some day they may pay with their own life for being this lazy. The Gringas I work with are smart women but they are all about "gossip" people magazine, maxing out their credit cards etc. :o :) ! They care more about how Brittney Spears takes a shit than how shit fertilizes a garden?? Go figure   ??

I doubt it ever gets this bad in our life time. We have been fortunate to have been the lucky ones that have enjoyed the personnel freedoms & cheap travel that other generations may struggle with. We are resilient & man moves on but every now & then there is a big pause in life like the “Dark Ages”. History tends to repeat itself, lets hope we learned enough too not repeat the worst of times???? I do have my doubts :) :D  !

On another note about oil has anyone ever looked at the charts on oil production & population growth? They understandably do go hand in hand. Wonder what this means as we run out because so far the population shows NO signs of slowing down :? ? Again way too much little head thinking is hurting us all  ...

Agree with everything in your last post Zippy, but I really don't feel we have a free market. The Big corps through their political accomplices can styfle any competitive plans. All the while saying how they going alternative etc.

The only way it gets fixed is a maverick politician like Theo. Roosevelt who puts things right or wait for the big Corps to be able to make more money from alternative fuel then they are making from oil. They will as usual have a monopoly so the price will be very high, but at least actual supply won't be a concern.

I think you hit the answer in your last sentence. Until now, any alternative energy had to compete with cheap gas. The higher the price of gas climbs, the more viable alternatives become. The "necessity" part of the equation was missing before: we didn't need alternative energy...we had gas!

Infrastructure may be a sticking point. We need a fuel source that is deliverable to the people. Now, we have several delivery means already in place; Natural Gas pipelines, the electric grid and fuel service stations. That means that alternatives that generate electricity, are liquids and compatible with gas storage tanks or are liquefied gases can be delivered using existing means.

I think the next five years are critical. And, we still have massive natural gas reserves, coal reserves and nuclear power generation to fall back on while other technologies are developed. It could be a lot worse!
