Gee, Prolijio, I am not sure that my getting out of the gulch will count since it happened so long ago.

But I think I have hit most of the places you mentioned over the last 20 years or so.

On my most recent trip last year, we did 5 days at Playa Tarmarindo, did some diving, body surfing, smoking cigars and drinking at a local cigar bar, and hit some really fine resturants. Also got to fly on the one of the Piper Caravans that Sansa runs. There were a few working girls in Tam, but it really was not worth the bother. We flew back to SJO and lo and behold, I still had three days left, which I spent in the gulch.

One piece of advice for anyone who wants to get out of the gulch is to decide what your level of comfort with being off the beaten track and plan to go to the location based on your personal needs. e.g. (generally speaking) there are better hotels on Guanacaste than on the Osa where conditions can be rather rustic but more flora, fuana and national parks on Osa. Additionally, flying can save time and some hassles.

To expand on my comment:

I only get about 30 days a year that I can travel. It's been that way since the very early 70s. It took me till 1997 to find a place that I was genuinely happy in. Now I have done many of the tourist things in the first few years that I traveled there. San Jose being the place I'm referring to. I live on the Gulf Coast and never go to the beach. Granted the ones in Costa Rica are much nicer but I'm not flying to Costa Rica to go to the beach. I live in South East Louisiana and drive through scenic swamps on my way to work each morning. Having not gotten out of the car to look around in about 30 years. So why would I fly to Central America to look at mother nature.

I'm not trying to be sarcastic about those things I just want you to understand how little they mean to me. Now on the other hand all of the things I genuinely enjoy on my vacation are readily at hand in San Jose and particularly at the Hotel Del Rey. That would be food, alcoholic beverages, gambling and of course available lovely young ladies. Now for truth in advertising I don't drink that much anymore and the gambling is used as my excuse to the people who know me in this world. We all go to San Jose for the same reason we do not all go back for the same reason. Me I do.

The only reason I can think of to get away from SJ would be to go on a short trip to the beach or volcano with a novia. Poosie is just so much more important than everything else when I'm on vacation in CR.

I agree with Shawn. All I do is eat, sleep, shit, take pics, and make love in the gulch. No time for anything else.

not even to brush your teeth, Mikey?

I also agree with Shawn. But when you're already feeling no pain on the plane down and staying 36-48 hours, is there really time for anything else? Thus far, no. YMMV.

Hey Mia2SJO... When you have the time, we'll both go down and fish with Mucho Gusto for a day... And guess what, the beer is available at 8:00am on the boat... Yeah buddy...
The chicas are also with us, so getting a hummer with a beer in one hand, out in the fresh air and on the water and it just don't get any better, my man.... 8) 8) 8)

It all sounds good. But to do this, he'd have to be in CR for more than 48 hours,. Plus - he'd have to get outa bed early that morning!!!

I am capable of getting out of bed at a reasonable hour.
And I realize that 48 hours would have to be committed to the shore. Which would mandate a .....96 hour trip to Costa Rica? :!: :?:

I think that the people of Costa Rica are wonderful. Even the ones that I have had contact with in the gulch. This includes the ladies that I have been with. I'm sure that the people outside San Jose are equally nice. There are very beautiful places throughout their country.

I have lived all my life in southern California. On the same day that you can go snow skiing in the morning, you can go surfing in the afternoon. The Monterey coast is one of the most beautiful coast lines in the world. The giant Redwoods are a wonder of nature. The Palm Springs area of the desert is a site to behold. The Newport coast is one of the most affluent in the world, with some of the hottest looking ladies in the world. San Francisco, and the various neighborhoods are world class. My point is, if I want a Sierra Club adventure, I have all that in California. Having said that it does not mean that I may choose to get outside the gulch on a rare occasion.

There is one basic reason I go to CR, hot Latin poosey, for a reasonable cost, and they act like they like me for money. I understand it is for the money, but right now I have more money than hot Latinas wanting me for free. This system happens to work well for me.

A question for all of you guys who say you don't need or want to leave the gulch. Do you go on other vacations throughout the year? Other than just spots where there is mongering? I guess what I'm getting at is this the only getaways you have, straight up sex vacations? Not judging or anything, just couldn't see all free time in my life being in an area like the gulch....

There are many reasons to hang in "the gulch" other than chicas. I enjoy meeting the guys and BSing (networking...) nearly as much as chasing girls. But then, I am easily amused... 8)

Thirdworld- I can't speak for everyone but I go on other vacations thoughout the year. Take in some baseball/college football games, gamble in Las Vegas, go to the beach in Sosua. Meant to see the zoo in St. Louis but time and a hangover did not permit. I try to alternate between "sex vacations" and more "acceptable" itineraries.

I also am easily amused and perhaps that is why my sentiments mirror Pacifica's. If I spend a total of 4 hours of a 48 hour trip nekkid with various chicas, does the whole vacation really then earn the distinction of being a "sex vacation?"

Who cares, three weeks from Saturday I get to return!

On a rare occasion I vacation at some resort. I work on the coast, so I see beaches any time I want to. Work , travel to-and-fro, and lack of desire to put up with gringas keeps me from chasing tail back in the states. Plus, living in the country, I don't feel like driving 45 minutes to get to the decent clubs that would only overcharge the sh*t out of me.
This why hanging out in the guch bangin' chicas and runnin' with the CRT guys makes for a great vacation for me. :P

I took the family on a cruise to the Bahamas a few weeks ago. We go to Las Vegas, Cancun, and other tourist traps. I try to take my family on at least one vacation per year. However, I treat myself to the gulch every other opportunity that I get. I hope to spend this Father's Day there as well (I am actually planning to leave the morning of) . I am sure that the chicas have presents for all of us padres out there.

Good question 3rd World!
