icordle@MiamiHerald.comAmerican Airlines said Monday that travelers who purchase domestic economy-class tickets on or after May 12 must pay $25 for a second checked bag.
The exceptions are: customers in American's AAdvantage program who have achieved AAdvantage Gold, AAdvantage Platinum and AAdvantage Executive Platinum levels; passengers who have purchased full-fare tickets in the economy, business and first-class cabins; and travelers with international itineraries (except to and from Canada and U.S. territories, such as Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands).
Customers may pay the fees at an airport self-service machine or at the curb-side check-in area with a credit card, the airline said. They can also pay the fee at the check-in counter with a credit card, check or cash.
The airline said the checked-baggage policy changes are due to the rising costs associated with the transportation of checked baggage, including the price of fuel.
The new policy also applies to travelers on American Eagle.
