There was another thread about why read "The Power of Now"? I didn't want to hijack the thread. IMJ, I'll take a stab at what he meant by reading "The Power of Now", and what a spiritual book has to do with any situation. I have read it three times now.

Reliving, and making a judgment about the past is the ego's way of making this event something that the ego is comfortable with, and right. Our ego needs to keep itself in its powerful place. If we are "right", we are move than. With the past there is no right, nor wrong, just interpretations of the event, by our ego (our deepest self). As we see on this board daily, the past, and the future, are up for great diversity of interpretations.

There is no past, and there is no future. It is just our ego's way of making "our story" right within ourselves. That is the ego's job. The past is over, only a memory. It is just our ego's interpretation of those past events, making them to be right for our ego's needs, for that occasion. That same event could be seen differently by anyone, as you see on this board. The future has not happened yet, so who really knows, again the ego guessing for its needs, and wants. That only leaves "The Now". This exact second in time that you are in. What you just read does not count, that is the past. Live each second in time with the awareness that you are in it, and your life will be much easier, and more fulfilled. It is not easy, but when I choose to live in "The Now", my life runs much smoother.

His current book, "A New Earth, Awakening to Your Life's Purpose", is a much harder read, and delves into the ego, and the making of "I" statements. The ego given voice.

Just my dos colones, from a dirty white boy from Compton. Now back to reading about poosey.

Health & happiness to all...

Steve- Santas Bro

This is just a re-hash of oriental philosophy.

Werner Erhardt made a fortune with it in the 70's. His program was called EST.

It is good stuff, and does help clarify thinking.

Good points, Santa.

Time is a manmade concept, useful but artificial. We exist in the "NOW" exclusively. This never changes. This is an absolute truth. The "NOW" is timeless. Hence it is the window to eternity.

Good post Bro, thanks. I'm listening to the power of now in my car and really enjoy it. I enjoy re-reading (or listening) to some of these texts repeatedly too, as I always seem to pick up new things each time.

It's true that Tolle's message in the power of now and a new earth is similar to other teachings but I think you could make that argument with almost any spiritual text.

The truth is none of this stuff is new, but to me that is what is so fascinating. You start to see common themes being presented over and over by different teachers spanning thousands of years. You gotta take notice. And when you come across a book or a teacher that explains it in a way that finally hits home its like a bolt of lightening. You experience your AHA moment (to quote from Oprah) and a light goes on. I would compare it to the first time I walked into the Del Rey. Once you've gotten a glimpse of that truth you know right away that something in you has just changed and there aint no going back.

Or, see Rodney Spencer's (Clark Gable's) speech about "IT" in the 1931 movie "The Fall and Rise of Susan Lenox" (with an indescribably beautiful Greta Garbo).
