It's often an interesting exercise to take a step back and reflect on "how things got where they are", and in that spirit, I wanted to pose this question to some of the longtime habitues of the scene in CR. A few such as Circus and Irish Drifter have in the past commented how they preferred the scene back when it wasn't so well-known and popular - when gringos were the exception rather than the rule.

So just what was it that irrecovably tipped the balance - do any single factors stand out, or was it a confluence of things? Would be interested in other theories beyond the poll options as well...

I would say the internet is probably the biggest reason for the popularity of Costa Rica(CRT,ISG,Club Hombre).Reading all the trip reports from the various sites makes one curious enough to check it out.mis dos centavos.

Of the specific things listed in the poll I would say the popularization of CRT and the openings of ZB & SL are a result of Costa Rica being on the mongering map not a cause of that.

The opening of the HDR had an effect. Not huge at first as it was a place for fisherman to overnight before and after heading out to the Pacific to do some serious fishing. The BM was much smaller then.

As I have posted in the past my first trips to CR predated any of those poll items and mongering was alive and well. I would say the biggest determining factor putting CR on the map was the proliferation of the home PC and the internet.

Certainly, everything listed above was a contributing factor, but I think the development of the internet [thank you, Al Gore  ] along with viagra were the major factors.

The internet puts info at people's fingertips, but they can find what they want on mongering in any country. The one thing that makes CR unique and brings in thousands of curious, horny, newbies in every year are the hordes of hotties at HDR.

Though mongering has existed here for a long time, long before the REY opened, I do believe that the opening of the REY was a great big shot in the arm. Then , and really at the same time, the developing popularity of the 'net' and availablility of info gave CR mongering a real kick in the ass!!!

The one choise not listed, not only for here but all mongering destinations is and has been the ever growing dissatisfaction, disgust, and dislike of gringas and their cold crap.

Having never been to CR, it seems this is reason is dead nuts..no pun intended..lol This combined with the internet (soo much info) has given a major boost to mongering destinations everywhere, giving guys more options when they get sick of the shit.

I only "discovered" Costa Rica last summer, thanks to my wingman The Bearded Clam, but I can't help but think Mucho Gusto's fishing expeditions had something to do with it.

Without the internet, I never would have found CR.

Decided one day in late '04 to google "Adult Male Travel" after about 10 pages of garbage I came across CRT, did some reading, booked a trip, the rest is history.

I am relatively new to CR - my first trip was 2/2007. I was looking to start a business in Latin America. I had it narrowed down to either Belize or CR. What tipped the scales in favor of CR was some web searches that initially landed on Don Gordo's website, which lead me to CRT.....also an absence of p4p opportunity in Belize.

I never could have made this assessment without the internet without visits to both locations and may hours of effort.

So as a relative newbie, I too, believe that the internet is the biggest influence to get us gringos to CR.

I learned about girls in Costa Rica from reading on the Internet. This was funny because I had 2 Tico employees at the time and they didn't tell me about it first. I guess Ticos don't see their homeland as a big sex destination.

I would definately say the internet. My first trip to CR was November 2007. Prior to that I had only heard info about Dominican Republic. Before I booked, I did a quick seard on adult vacations and to my suprise ran across several sites as well (CH, ISG & CRT). After looking at flights from NYC, I was sold. Cheap flights, beautiful women and plenty of booze.
