Friday on 20/20: Prostitution in America
Quote:
NEW YORK (AP) - Former New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer's call girl scandal prompted ABC News to give the go-ahead to a two-hour prime-time special on prostitution that includes Diane Sawyer's visit to a legal brothel in Nevada.

The "20/20" special, which airs 9 p.m. EDT Friday, has been in the works for two years. It was expected to be on sometime in May or June, but ABC moved it up because Spitzer's resignation last week put the topic in the headlines, said David Sloan, executive producer of ABC's newsmagazines.

"It has taken a lot of time and I think it's going to be very provocative," Sloan said.

The special's lengthy gestation did not indicate any cold feet on the part of ABC about airing it, he said. It will be on during the same week that the U.S. Supreme Court announced that it would hear a major case about broadcast indecency.

On "Prostitution in America: Working Girls Speak," Sawyer interviews sex workers in poor neighborhoods outside Philadelphia and in one of Nevada's legal brothels. ABC hurriedly set up interviews with some highly paid prostitutes who work the luxury penthouses in a nod to the Spitzer scandal.

The New York Democrat is accused of spending thousands of dollars on expensive prostitutes, most recently paying for a woman to travel from New York to Washington where he was spending the night.

"Much of the coverage on prostitution is as a cultural phenomenon, when it's really about human beings that are in crisis," Sawyer said. "There is a lot of denial about the suffering these women experience."

Sloan said the special is structured so much of the racier material is confined to the second hour.

ABC speaks to experts on the issue, including columnist Nicholas Kristof of The New York Times, particularly during the first hour.

"Behind every prostitute is a story of sex abuse, drug dependency or mental illness," Sloan said. "No one chooses this."

He said it was a serious look at the issue, not an attempt to be salacious.

"We're very proud of it," he said.

Quote:
In a rare and intimate look at the oldest profession in the world, Diane Sawyer goes inside both the legal and the underground businesses of prostitution in America.

From expensive New York penthouses to Nevada's legal brothels to the tough streets outside Philadelphia and Reno, Sawyer speaks candidly with America's "working girls."

Who are these women, what drives them to sell sex for money and what is it like to work as a prostitute? Sawyer also speaks with experts, including New York Times columnist Nicholas Kristof, to examine the state of prostitution today.

Watch "Prostitution in America: Working Girls Speak" Friday on a special two-hour "20/20" at 9 p.m. ET.

The world of high-end, high-priced prostitution has been in the news lately because of former New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer's scandal involving an alleged high-priced escort service, but this kind of service underrepresents what prostitution in America really is. Behind the "Pretty Woman" image is a world of vulnerability, danger and fear.

For more than two years, "20/20" cameras documented the daily risks of streetwalkers and expensive call girls. The report captures the realities of who these women are and how the law deals with them compared to their male clientele.

The program follows women -- whether a single mom, a college student, a housewife, a school teacher or a drug addict -- who have ended up in places they never planned to be. Some are lured by the dream of a flashy lifestyle and fast money, others to feed their drug habit and just to survive, but almost all struggle with the challenge of how hard it is to get out of the profession.

Whether the women are making $20 in five minutes or $20,000 in one night, the program follows the grim spiral of dependence these women often fall into.

One working girl named Jessie says,"We believe money buys happiness. And it doesn't. But it does for a while." Another says she makes as much in one day at a legalized brothel than she would make as a nurse working for two weeks. What would it take for them to change their lives?

So long as no one finds these "reporters" discount airfare and rooms here in CR.....who cares? The dollar is very weak these days because of the trade imbalance in the U.S. Hopefully they won't try to export their ancient puritanical ideas. In CR I don't think aLL the working chicas are either dug addicts or mentally ill. Hey wait a minute...maybe they are on to something. Maybe some of these Colombianas who are a 6 at best are asking for "cien/hora". They are mentally ill. If ALL the hookers in the US are drug and disease infected, then just keep them in the US. I like to think that most prostitution here in CR is economically driven and provides a good sane two-way street. I am naive enough to believe that some of the working chicas here evn like the sex sometimes.

Not that I give a damn about the state of the world's oldest profession in the good ole' USA, but the passage quoted above has to be the biggest load of P.C. horse manure I've heard in a long time.

And they drew this conclusion from their scientific sampling of the 20 or so hookers they interviewed for the special I suppose?

Has this idiot David Sloan ever heard of the concept of "free will"? In fact, only that miniscule portion of the world's hookers that are actively coerced into the trade don't actually "choose" it.

I think I'll watch the Lakers game instead...

I agree, while many girls are abuse4 victims, there are also girls that get into knowing full well what they're doing.

The fact is, if you are good looking, and a good business person, you can make a shitload of money in a short period of time. I've known several girls that did that. Got in, got out, paid for college, etc..

Let's face it, television shows like this have one goal in mind: ratings. Sex sells, in case nobody else noticed. This sort of thing gives someone like Diane Sawyer a chance to pretend she's taking the moral 'high ground' while exploiting sex for advertising dollars (and her own giant salary).

Pity the poor schmucks who need to watch this to get a little thrill in their sexually barren lives. They are too timid to even go to an overpriced strip club and pay outrageous prices for a 'hands off' lap dance. Praise de lord I don't need that mierda.

Well of course this seems to be the case. It is illegal in most places in the US. Make it legal and see how many "normal" girls you will find in this line of work.

Well it was interesting and not quite as one-sided as expected, some parts were just depressing.
Funny when the high priced escort said Spitzers wife should leave him for being a hypocrite- not for sleeping with a prostitute.
And did you catch that guy paying $20k for a TLN at the Bunny Ranch  Jeesh and Mr. bunnyranch takes half plus charges the girls for rent & food.

That was a real shocker. It was what I expected. With every interview, that dyke Diane Sawyer tried her best to make every prostitute who seemed to do it by choice feel bad about herself.

DS: I have a hard time believe that [you are truly happy]...
DS: Don't you feel you are selling something that shouldn't be sold?
DS: Were you abused as a Ch*ld? as a teenager? as an adult?

"Max" from the Bunny Ranch showed her pics of the mansion she's building herself from the money she makes. But Diane just couldn't let her go without trying to break her down too. She eventually did get her to cry, and then tried to console her when she did.

What's with the dumbass who paid one chick $20,000 to spend the night with him at the BR? Are guys so lonely/stupid/pathetic? His gringa wife must be a real pleasure that he'd pay 20k for a night of freedom, he likes to "spend time" and talk with Max.

Btw, Dennis Hof, the owner of the Bunny Ranch is a CRT member (look up "Mr Bunny Ranch").

And why do these reporters/experts always connect human trafficking with prostitution? Why can't they understand that not every prostitute is forced to do it? :?

And she finished off the hour with a famous passage from the bible about "he who is without sin can caste the first stone". I guess all the prostitutes are going to hell. Can ABC, or any other news program, produce a story objectively anymore, without their moralistic superiority?

Is it me,or wasn't this program shown here in CR on Amnet? Paco said in the beginning of this thread that it would be on ABC last night at 9pm EST which was 7pm our time. I tried a few times then went back to basketball.Did I miss something,or didn't the feed from Denver pick it up?

It's not often a CRT member makes it on national TV. Dennis Hof was on both 20/20 on ABC and Dateline on NBC last night. The most amazing part of the 20/20 show was a guy that paid $20,000 for TLN     Unbelievable. Diane Sawyer said that a lot guys want the GFE :P I hope she doesn't find out about CRT.

Was on Amnet channel 69 (how appropriate  ) from 8 to 10 PM Denver time. Denver TV uses the central time zone schedule so anything on at 9 p.m. EDT is on at 8 p.m. MDT

That guy was an idiot for paying 20k for a TLN. And his wife lets him !!!!! I can't believe the cash that goes through that place. Plus Dennis Hof gets half of it. And on top of that, the girls have to pay for their food, and $20 per night, unless they make $1000, then they don't have to pay the $20 that day.

And Max with her million dollar mansion. It's funny how, at the end of the show - when Diane Sawyer did a follow up on several of the girls. She said that Max quit the Bunny Ranch for 6 months, but then went back. Hell yeah. It costs a lot of $$$ to maintain a million dollar mansion!

And how 'bout the crack ho's in Philly? As low as $5 for full service ?!?!?

Overall, IMO it was just another typical Diane Sawyer documentary!

For those of you not familar with the Bunny Ranch, or the Nevada brothels in general, that $20,000 is more common than you'd think. Dennis Hof is a blowhard who loves to brag about those huge-price sessions. Most of his high-end girls charge $1000, $2000 or even more for just an hour. Another place, Sheri's Ranch in Pahrump (one hour west of Vegas), has these large deluxe rooms called bungalows; price is $1000 an hour with a 3-hour minimum. And yes, there are plenty of guys, ones with a lot of money but no sense or brains, who do pay these prices, because they've been brainwashed into believing that the higher the price, the higher the quality. They sneer at a place like CR, deriding it as unsafe third-world gutter-trash. I know because I do have experience with the Nevada brothels, and if you mention CR or Rio or Montreal or any place outside the US the brothel diehards get real snippy. Have made the occasional CR convert though. :D
