Hello All,
I am getting ready for my 2nd trip to CR in about a month. Am planning on staying about 30 days this time.

I have tried the beef in CR....at a few of the better restaurants....Presidente Hotel, Morazan Hotel, Lukas Restaurant, etc. and can not say that I care for it at all.

I don't even like the hamburgers from Burger King there, or from the 'Hamburger Factory' - a popular eating place on Avienda Central in SJ.

I have heard that there are folks who are getting some real good beef from Argentina....where they certainly have a lot of it....and hearsay is that, it is very good quality too.

Anyone know where one could find some decent tasting beef (steak) in San Jose...either at a restaurant or a meat market, or supermarket?

I just can't 'stomach' the local CR beef........and am hoping I can locate some decent tasting beef somewhere there.

Thanks, Steve

I like El Chicote restaurant 400 metros west of the ICE building in La Sabana Norte just west of downtown. Nice atmosphere and the steaks were great, both times I was there last year. Wile Coyote

If you just want a flavorful hunk of good steak no frills: at Mall San Pedro there is a churrasco in the food court. Many choices every cut I have tried has been great. I took two brothers at different times and both concurred - fantastic for the price about 2Kcolones for a pequeño which is I’d say about 12/14oz. and includes a salad and drink.

I’ll be down there when you are, if you want to try it for lunch I’d be interested to see if you agree with us.

Steve also,

Novice,

Are you talking about "Carne Sabor" on the 2nd floor? If that is the one then I agree. It's great. They have this meat platter which consists of 2 thick pork chops, a steak, 2 churrizos, salad(tico style so not really worth mentioning) and a small potato for about 3000 colones. A pretty good bargain and the meat is better then what you will find in a soda.

Best place in Escazu. In front of Los Anonos Restaurant.

The place is called El Novillo Alegre Parrillada Argentina (The Happy Calf Argentinan Grill).

A must. Nice place, great food, good pricing.

I've been to El Chicote numerous times. The Baby Beef is delicious. I've ordered the Baby Beef entre on many ocassions. You can't go wrong with it.
Also had the Corvina aka Sea Bass topped with shrimp, mussels, etc. and it was very nice too.

It's generally a quiet mellow dining spot.

White table cloths.

Took a Tica there and she really enjoyed the shrimp in a butter garlic sauce.

Dinner for 2 usually around $50 - $60 US including apertizer, a bottle of wine,Coffee, desert etc.

Service is great.

I highly recommend it.

It's worth the $$

Meat can be real hit or miss. I kind of like the Brazilian steak houses, but it's certainly not "prime" meat. There are a number of agentinian places. Also, The White House in Escazu typically has some good imported beef.

Five of us ate at the Costa Rica Grande Hotel last week. The Grande steak was the worst steak I hve ever had. Tough full of grissel. What a waste or $190. I will try the San Pedro mall for my next steak. Thanks guys. SEAHAWK

For USDA beef, go to the White House, Los Anonos, or the Factory. However, all USA beef in CR, is boneless due to some old restrictions pertaining to mad cow.

Local Beef - Any of the above mentioned, including just about all the Argentinian spots.

For a combination of both go to Azucar in Santa Ana. They claim to feed their own cattle on corn and so it is supposed to taste like USDA prime. In my experience it did taste like a USA steak, it just didn't taste as good as "The Palm". Though they managed to get the prices exactly like "The Palm".

Phoenix Rising & I had the tenderloin for 2 @ Donde Carlos last week & it was terrific. So much meat that he took almost half of it home to his Amigianovia. :D

Another rather good steak house, which I enjoyed vastly more than Whitehouse and Los Anonos, and Donde Carlos, was the steak at Restaurante Jurgens, behind the Subari dealership in Los Yoses/San Pedro, as if you're going to Hotel M.

Can you give us some idea of the price? Jurgens has often been been cited as being the most expensive restaurant in Costa Rica. Knowing the prices at the Capital Grille at the White House that is a rather scary implication.
