Hello old friends and other board guys
I have not posted in a long time but it has always been great seeing old buddies and meeting new friends thanks to Tomas and his great site.
After years of dealing with people and this culture, I would like to make some
commentary about the "real deal" down here.
1. Tica/os do not appreciate generosity. In fact, they see you as weak and
careless with your money.
2. They generally will all try to latch on to you by "being your friend". 99%
of the time the friendship will cost you money.
3. In many cases they will "abuse" your "friendship" by trying to take
advantage of you and get indignant when you catch them.
4. Finally, when you want to cut them off, they will wine and cry like
Babi*s and take no responsibility for their misdeeds.
5. They never learned that you can shear a sheep many times but only
kill him once.
For those making these relationships, this commentary may open your eyes in "fantasy land" and understand the "real deal" down here.
Another example last night. Drunk gringo who wants to act like a bigshot
buys the DR bartenders shots. 2 minutes of that and out comes the $135 bar bill. Even worse, the bartender wines for a big tip and the a hole gives him 5,000 more. After getting screwed for the drinks, the dumb ass rewards her with a tip. Guys... wise the phuck up
Hope this saves one or two sheep wandering in.

Let me start out by saying it was a pleasure finally making your acquaintance. Very early in my career back in late '04, I remember reading several of your posts that were of very valuable information for newbies including myself.
As a general rule I agree with your point about generosity, but I have seen exceptions to the rule. I have built relationships over my many trips and believe it is more than just the fact that I am a nice guy (not an easy mark). Do I take care of the service people who take very good care of me, absolutely. I do not feel in any way taken advantage of or do I feel I am seen as weak with my money.
I tend to agree with your other points, I have had several attempts and pulling the heart strings, It is usually followed by "mi amor, no primero vez in Costa Rica" and is quickly laughed off as try it the newbies babi.......
Unfortunately even with over 13,000 members CRT is still the minority in the Del Rey and Key Largo abd the chicas will always try to find the easy marks.
Great example of the bartender drinks story, I have seen this numerous times thinking they have a chance with some of them....

I
Have a few friend bartenders in the DR/KL, none of whom I buy drinks for there, I do ocassionaly see one of them outside of work and have had lunch (on me) with one in particular, again not feeling taken advantge of, but have been told on more than one ocassion what the bartenders think of those types....and they all get a good buzz and a good laugh later....
